NBA Trade Rumors: New Jersey Nets Must Deal for DeMarcus Cousins

Matt ShetlerJun 4, 2018

The New Jersey Nets passed on DeMarcus Cousins once.

They shouldn't do so again.

After passing on Cousins in the 2010 NBA draft in favor of Derrick Favors, who they would eventually flip for Deron Williams, the Nets reportedly have interest in acquiring Cousins from the Sacramento Kings after Cousins had yet another falling out with head coach Paul Westphal.

It's still unknown if the Kings would even consider dealing Cousins after he reportedly demanded a trade, but if so, the Nets should be all over him.

Sure, he's got some growing up to do, but he's got talent and going after him could serve three purposes.

For one, it would beef up the frontcourt in the short-term. Once Brook Lopez returns from injury, the New Jersey bigs would suddenly be a pretty solid group.

Secondly, it would show Deron Williams that the organization is serious about trying to compete. It could be a step in the right direction in an attempt to get Williams to re-sign.

Finally, Cousins could possibly be flipped again. This time in a deal to acquire Orlando center Dwight Howard, which has been the ultimate goal all season.

Cousins is a guy who nearly averaged a double-double during his rookie campaign and is averaging one in the early parts of this season.

He would come with some baggage for sure, but acquiring a young talent would be well worth the risk.

It would be a shame to see the Nets pass on him twice in two years.
