Chiefs' Travis Kelce: Patrick Mahomes Poised to Catch Tom Brady as NFL's GOAT

Erin WalshOct 24, 2023

One NFL player that is often mentioned in the greatest of all-time debate is Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

While former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady sits firmly atop the NFL's GOAT debate, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce believes Mahomes will overtake the seven-time Super Bowl champion before his career is finished.

Kelce said when asked if Mahomes will catch Brady and eclipse him as the GOAT during an appearance on the I Am Athlete podcast (1:12:00 mark):

"Obviously I got all the respect for Tom Brady. I wasn't able to get him in the playoffs, so I've been Tom Brady multiple times in my career, so I got all the love for him. He's the GOAT and the best to ever do it but I think right now the rate that Pat is at, how he's doing it, I think it's a little more all on Pat than it was on Brady. At least Brady's first couple of years to where Pat is now and that's only going to keep evolving and it's only going to keep going up. I just think one-five has an ability to find a way to get things done even when it breaks down or he's got to make this crazy throw across field and that's just something you haven't seen in the NFL and he's been doing it since his first snap and I think he's going to play a long, long time. So I think he'll catch him in all the accolades but I think the biggest thing is always going to be those Super Bowls. That's a lot of Super Bowls."

It's going to be difficult for Mahomes to catch Brady with seven Super Bowl wins. However, Mahomes already led the Chiefs to two Super Bowl titles in his first seven seasons and he has shown no signs of slowing down.

The 28-year-old has the Chiefs firmly among the top title contenders in the AFC again this season, and there's a real possibility Kansas City will be the first team to repeat as champions since Brady's Patriots in 2004 and 2005.

Mahomes has a long way to go to be considered the NFL's GOAT, but he has plenty of time to accomplish even bigger things in the near future.
