Alabama vs LSU: National Championship Will Further Prove a Playoff Is Needed

Tim KeeneyJun 7, 2018

Most people outside the states of Louisiana and Alabama are going to hate the national championship.

"Too much defense," they'll say. "Why would I watch if I can't see a touchdown every possession? Give me more Washington and Baylor."

To each his own, I guess, but don't call this a "bad game" just because the top two defenses are pitted against each other. On the contrary, that will make this a very good and compelling game.

Just not quite compelling enough.

After Oklahoma State's win last night in the Fiesta Bowl, Monday's championship could be the "best ever" and 95 percent of sports fans still wouldn't feel satisfied.

No matter what the outcome, the need for some type of playoff system in college football is going to be further highlighted by the events of this year's season.

If LSU wins, they'll be the champions, but Oklahoma State will feel cheated that Alabama got two shots at beating the Tigers.

If Alabama pulls off the victory, even more madness will ensue. The Crimson Tide and Tigers will both stake claims to being national champions, while Oklahoma State will still feel cheated at the lack of a true chance.

Sorry Cowboy fans, but you're going to feel cheated no matter what.

You can't give one team two chances at beating No. 1 in the same season and not give No. 3 any chances. It just doesn't work like that.

No matter who beat who, no matter who lost to who, it just doesn't make sense.

But that's not everything.

After seeing how dominate both LSU and Alabama are on the defensive side of the ball, people are going to be reminded that they much rather would have seen Oklahoma State in this game.

Two average offenses and two great defenses is fun, but a great offense versus a great defense is even better.

It would be the classic "unstoppable force vs. immovable object" if LSU played Oklahoma State. And LSU-Alabama is just going to make us want that even more.

I'm not saying Alabama doesn't deserve to be in the national championship.

I'm not saying the national championship will be a bad game.

But the circumstances of this season are going to make us fight for a playoff system more than ever before.

At least give the Cowboys a chance. That's all anyone wants.
