NCAA Baseball Rankings 2023: Latest Top 25 D-I RPI, Team Records and Standings

Adam WellsMay 10, 2023

Two weeks from the start of conference tournaments across the country, college baseball has no clear hierarchy.

After dropping a weekend series at Auburn, LSU moved down to No. 2 in the Top 25 rankings for the first time this season. The Tigers still have the best overall record in the SEC (37-10), but they trail Arkansas in the West division standings by one game in the win column.

Taking LSU's spot at No. 1 overall for the first time in program history is Wake Forest. Head coach Tom Walter's squad won two out of three games against No. 20 Boston College over the weekend and has yet to drop a series (8-0).

15. Oregon State (33-14; RPI: No. 31)

16. Clemson (31-17; RPI: No. 13)

17. Kentucky (33-13; RPI: No. 1)

22. UTSA (36-12; RPI: No. 54)

23. Tennessee (32-16; RPI: No. 27)

24. Oregon (31-16; RPI: No. 26)

25. Southern Mississippi (32-15; RPI: No. 23)

Even though Kentucky is all the way down at No. 17 in the Top 25 rankings, it has the best RPI in college baseball. The Wildcats got a huge boost over the weekend with a three-game sweep of No. 3 South Carolina.

The series couldn't have come at a better time for Kentucky after it was swept the previous weekend by Vanderbilt. The team dropped out of the rankings following that series but vaulted back into the Top 20 by outscoring the Gamecocks 30-12 at Cliff Hagan Stadium.

The RPI standings are, not surprisingly, dominated by SEC and ACC programs. The SEC occupies five of the top six spots, with Wake Forest at No. 2 the only team to break up that group.

Behind Wake Forest, Duke and Boston College are the other ACC teams in the RPI's top eight. Indiana State (32-13), which isn't ranked in the D1Baseball.com Top 25, checks in at No. 9 in the RPI.

The Sycamores have won six consecutive games and scored a 10-2 upset win over No. 5 Vanderbilt at Hawkins Field on April 18.

Wake Forest and LSU have favorable matchups coming up to maintain their spots in the rankings going into the final series of the regular season next week. The Demon Deacons travel to Tallahassee for a Friday-to-Sunday matchup with Florida State.

Florida State is just 18-28 this season, but it has a respectable 14-11 record at home. The Seminoles haven't defeated a team currently ranked in the Top 25 in 2023.

LSU had a tuneup game Tuesday against Northwestern State before hosting Mississippi State in a three-game series starting Friday. The Tigers haven't lost back-to-back series all season. The Bulldogs have lost six consecutive games and nine of 13 road contests.

Even though LSU lost its series against Auburn last weekend, No. 1 starter Paul Skenes got it the lone victory Friday with another brilliant performance. The potential top pick in the 2023 MLB draft struck out 15 in 7.1 shutout innings.

The biggest series this weekend will pit No. 3 Arkansas against No. 6 South Carolina at Baum-Walker Stadium in Fayetteville. The fireworks should be on display for two of the best offenses in the SEC.

Only LSU and Florida have scored more runs than these two teams in the conference. The Razorbacks have scored at least six runs in seven straight games dating back to April 27.

Last weekend's disappointing effort against Kentucky shouldn't dramatically change the outlook for South Carolina. Gavin Casas still hit three homers in the three-game set vs. the Wildcats. He has 19 long balls for the season, putting him two behind Ethan Petry for the team lead.
