Kentucky Derby Results 2023: Final Race Chart, Finishing Times and Purse

Francisco RosaMay 7, 2023

In just his fourth career start, Mage shocked the world Saturday evening as he won the 149th running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs against a loaded and talented field.

Following a slow start out of the gate that left him towards the back of the pack over the first couple of turns, Mage made a very strong move at the top of the home stretch and ended up edging out Two Phil's—one of the pre-race favorites—to secure the win.

He had 15-1 odds going into the derby and is now one step closer to winning the 2023 Triple Crown.

In case you missed it, here's how things turned out in the Run for the Roses.

Tapit Trice, a 9-2 favorite to win the race, ended up finishing a disappointing seventh place. And while he didn't make his bettors any money, Two Phil's and Angel of Empire, two of the other favorites, certainly did, finishing second and third, respectively.

They also got a nice cut of the purse, winning $600,000 and $300,000, respectively.

But it was Mage who was the big winner of the evening, earning a whopping $1.86 million and ending up with an impressive finishing time.

Here's a look at the results, the final race chart and purse.

Kentucky Derby 2021 Finishing Time, Race Chart and Purse

1. Mage, 2:01.57, $1.86 million

2. Two Phil's, (one length behind), $600,000

4. Disarm, (4 1/2), $150,000

5. Hit Show, (6 1/4), $90,000

6. Derma Sotogake, (8)

16. Verifying, (54 3/4)

17. Jace's Road, (55 1/4)

18. Cyclone Mischief, (55 1/2)

While it wasn't the fastest finish time in recent years, Mage's 2:01.57 was a good bit quicker than Rich Strike in his shocking upset last year (2:02.61).

He became just the fourth winner in history to only have three previous starts, joining Big Brown (2008), Regret (2015) Justify and (2018).

Trained by Gustavo Delgado and jockeyed by Hall of Famer Javier Castellano, Mage took a bunch of people by surprise with his late effort as he led just three horses going into the backstretch.

But Castellano knew he had a special horse and pushed it all the way to his first career win in the Kentucky Derby, ending his 0-for-15 record.

"I never give up," Castellano said following the race. "I always try hard to do the right thing. It took me a little while to get there. I finally got it."

With the Preakness Stakes just a few weeks away on May 20 in Baltimore, Mage may not afford another slow start if he wants to compete for the Triple Crown, as it's the shortest of the three races at 1 3/16th miles.

It has the potential to be one of the more surprising runs in some time.

As entertaining as the derby was on Saturday, the death of a couple of horses following the races on the undercard cast a shadow over the proceedings. Seven horses died at Churchill Downs over recent days.

Chloe's Dream, a three-year-old gelding, and Freezing Point, a three-year-old colt, were the latest casualties.

Chloe's Dream injured its left knee during the first turn in Saturday's second race, while Freezing Point suffered an ankle injury during the eighth race of the day, the Pat Day Mile.

Both horses were taken away in an equine ambulance and were later euthanized.

All of the incidents in the lead-up to the Kentucky Derby continued to raise more pressing questions about the future of the sport.
