NHL Draft Lottery 2023: Date, Odds, Projected Order, Latest Regular-Season Standings

Kristopher KnoxApr 12, 2023

The NHL regular season is nearly over, and the 2023 playoffs are right around the corner. While much of the league is focused on the chase for the Stanley Cup, some teams have already turned their attention to the offseason and the NHL draft.

WHL star Connor Bedard appears to be the top prize for whichever team wins the draft lottery in May. The 17-year-old, who was recently named the World Junior Championship MVP, appears poised for an early NHL debut.

While Bedard is a cut above prospects like Matvei Michkov and Adam Fantilli, there will be quality depth atop the draft order. If teams are tanking for those top selections, you wouldn't know it.

The Chicago Blackhawks upset the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday night, while the Columbus Blue Jackets took the Philadelphia Flyers into overtime. The Anaheim Ducks lost to the Vancouver Canucks, but they made a game of it, losing 3-2. Chicago, Columbus and Anaheim still have good odds at claiming the top selection, but none of them appear interested in simply laying down to finish the season.

What are teams' odds of winning the draft lottery this year? Let's take a look.

Tuesday's win was a fairly significant blow to Chicago's chances of claiming the top pick. The Blackhawks entered the game with fewer points than the Blue Jackets and Ducks despite having played one more game than Columbus.

Chicago is now tied with Anaheim and a point behind Columbus in the lottery race. Chicago must hope that the Blue Jackets and Ducks do what it did on Tuesday and pick up a surprising victory in their final games.

The San Jose Sharks (60 points) are also in the mix to finish with the worst record, and it's a tight race entering the final few days of the regular season.

Chicago will wrap its season on Thursday at home against the Flyers. Columbus will be at home against the Penguins on Thursday and against the Buffalo Sabres on Friday. The Ducks' season will end at home against the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday.

San Jose will visit the Calgary Flames on Wednesday and the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday. The Blue Jackets lead the odds race with a 25.5 percent chance of winning the top draft selection.

Percentage Chance of Earning the No. 1 Pick

Columbus Blue Jackers 25.5%

Anaheim Ducks 13.5%

Chicago Blackhawks 11.5%

San Jose Sharks 9.5%

Montreal Canadiens 8.5%

Arizona Coyotes 7.5%

Philadelphia Flyers 6.5%

Washington Capitals 6%

Detroit Red Wings 5%

Vancouver Canucks 3.5%

St. Louis Blues 3%
