An Intercontinental Banger
3 of 4
On paper, no match was seemingly more guaranteed to be great than the Triple Threat Match for the Intercontinental Championship.
In reality, it was.
Sheamus, Drew McIntyre, and Gunther beat the ever-living hell out of each other in a match that saw three bruised, even bloodied chests and battered bodies. The babyface challengers played up the friction between them, with Sheamus taking exception to McIntyre standing between him and the IC title that had eluded him throughout his career.
As the two friends-turned-enemies-turned-friends battled each other, each looking to land a knockout blow by way of their signature kick-based finishers, Gunther bided his time. When an opening presented itself, he launched himself off the top rope, delivering a splash and finishing McIntyre with a powerbomb.
This was a fight. A good, old-fashioned brawl of a match between expert clubbers. Gunther winning was the right call, he did it cleanly and everything that led to the finish was executed to perfection.
The show's third five-star match, guaranteeing WrestleMania 39 ranks among the greatest events ever produced by WWE.
A Classic Main Event Hampered by Controversy
4 of 4
Roman Reigns defeated Cody Rhodes in the main event of WrestleMania. The outcome was not at all what fans expected it to be and while that is an argument for another day, what is not up for debate was how damn good the match that preceded the controversial finish was.
Reigns and Rhodes took the WWE Universe on a rollercoaster ride of emotion, with the audience firmly behind The American Nightmare and wanting to see him end The Tribal Chief's historic 900-plus-day reign as Undisputed WWE Universal champion.
The Usos attempted to screw Rhodes over but fans were dealt a reprieve from the same old, same old when Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn rushed the ring to fight them off. When Rhodes channeled his father and brother to stun Reigns, and then deliver two Cross Rhodes, it appeared as though the triumph the industry had been waiting for would happen.
Then, Solo Sikoa returned to the ringside area after being ejected earlier in the match and delivered a Samoan Spike that would seal Rhodes' fate.
Despite a finish that will be analyzed, overanalyzed, and reanalyzed in the weeks and months to come, the match that preceded it was a spectacle that only WWE can deliver. It was greatness on the grandest stage and a match both men will be able to look back on and appreciate as the epic that it was.
It earned its near-perfect start rating and would have with a finish that better stuck the landing, even as Triple H and Reigns, himself, attempted to assure fans that there's more story to be told at the post-show press conference.
