6 Undercard Matches to Book for WWE WrestleMania 39

Kevin BergeMar 11, 2023

WrestleMania 39 is shaping into a solid card, though the show is still lacking depth, especially as a two-night event over April 1 and 2.

WWE has still not officially booked Ronda Rousey, Gunther, Rey Mysterio, Edge, Drew McIntyre, Finn Bálor, Dominik Mysterio and more.

With eight matches already announced, the event could still use some heavy hitters to fill out the undercard.

Some obvious matches are waiting for the right moment to be announced. Still, others could not happen at all. It will be up to WWE to find the right way to book the most deserving talent on this show possible.

These are the seven matches that should be booked for the WrestleMania Goes Hollywood undercard.

Rey Mysterio vs. Dominik Mysterio

1 of 6

WWE has struggled in certain stories to build true WrestleMania angles, but Rey Mysterio vs. Dominik Mysterio has far exceeded all expectations as one of the most well-told stories going into The Show of Shows.

While this match is not officially confirmed for 'Mania, it is almost a certainty. More importantly, it needs to happen.

Dominik is a 25-year-old star who has improved with each month. While he is still a work in progress, his recent promos have gotten him the natural heat most heels dream of.

Even if Dom never meets his potential, a bout with his father is a guaranteed money match that will push him to the best performance of his career. The two have likely been practicing for this moment for a decade.

The Show of Shows needs matches like this.

Intercontinental Title: Gunther (c) vs. McIntyre vs. Sheamus

2 of 6

Gunther is the most dominant WWE intercontinental champion of the modern era, and his best opponent to date was Sheamus. The two had one of the matches of the year in 2022 at Clash at the Castle.

Eventually, WWE needs to pit these two against each other again, but a new challenger for The Ring General may be even more important right now. Gunther has never fought Drew McIntyre, and the two would have a special match.

Instead of either individual match, WWE is pointing toward a Triple Threat match at WrestleMania following a controversial ending to a Fatal 5-Way No. 1 contender bout.

On a stacked 'Mania card, either individual match could be overshadowed, so it makes more sense to put on a fun match and wait for a time where Gunther vs. Sheamus or Gunther vs. McIntyre can be a true co-main event.

This could very easily steal the show, focusing on three men who have more than earned their spot on the WrestleMania card over the past year.

Hell in a Cell: Edge vs. Finn Bálor

3 of 6

The Judgment Day has built a unique story with Edge over the past year. First following his lead, Damian Priest and Rhea Ripley would choose Finn Bálor over The Rated-R Superstar.

Since that time, Bálor has tormented Edge at every turn. He forced his rival to quit at Extreme Rules 2022 and still allowed Ripley to knock out Beth Phoenix afterward with a con-chair-to.

Edge and Bálor should reach the final stage of their rivalry at WrestleMania, but it needs a major stipulation.

What better than bringing back Hell in a Cell for the climax of this long-running story? Edge has competed inside the cell twice, last using it to end his rivalry with Seth Rollins.

Edge and Bálor could have a match that will truly stand out on this WrestleMania card.

Women's Tag Team Championships: Rousey & Baszler (c) vs. Natalya & Beth Phoenix

4 of 6

Women's tag team champions Becky Lynch and Lita are booked for a six-woman tag match alongside Trish Stratus against Damage CTRL. This leaves the titles undefended at WrestleMania.

The gold should be on the line at The Show of Shows. No team is better suited to take it than Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler right after Rousey has been cleared to compete.

Lynch and Lita could defend the title on Night 1 then fight Bayley, IYO SKY and Dakota Kai on Night 2, but it does not make sense to double-book anyone for a show that needs to represent more of the roster.

If Rousey and Baszler can capture the titles, likely with an assist from Damage CTRL, there is an established story with Natalya, who cannot find a tag team partner who will help her challenge them.

Both Shotzi and Tegan Nox have been easily dispatched by the heels, but The Queen of Harts had one more former partner that she could call. Beth Phoenix has returned to action and could be looking for one last title run.

This is an unlikely match for WrestleMania, considering Rousey's injury status and the current status of the Women's Tag Team Championships. However, it would be the best way to pay off a long-running angle and give veterans a deserved 'Mania spotlight.

Alpha Academy vs. Maximum Male Models

5 of 6

The strangest story has begun to develop on Monday Night Raw. Maximum Male Models are seeking out a third model, and Maxxine Dupri has decided that she wants Otis.

It may seem silly to think that Alpha Academy vs. MMM can be a featured match at WrestleMania, but everyone involved has done great work to set the stage.

Chad Gable has especially been one of the red brand's hardest-working performers. His matches with Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins in recent weeks have rivaled the work of anyone else in WWE.

Since LA Knight departed from MMM, ma.çé, mån.sôör and Dupri have fully embraced their wacky gimmick. Their YouTube series, Making It Maximum, was some of the funniest content WWE has produced in recent years.

This would be a filler match on the card, but it can still tell a fun story, especially with both Otis and Gable's status in WWE on the line. It is likely that one or both would join MMM at the end of the match.

This can set the stage for a welcome face turn by Gable, who can begin a rise toward United States Championship contention.

WrestleMania Battle Royals Return

6 of 6

WWE's WrestleMania battle royals have often been a wasted aspect of The Show of Shows. This is likely why these matches have been taken off the card and instead played out on the SmackDown before 'Mania.

However, these matches lose meaning when they do not actually happen at WrestleMania. The best way to revamp this concept is to guarantee that the winner gets a title match and to also ensure not everyone gets a spot in the contest.

The battle royals should be contained to no more than 20 wrestlers. The men's can include Solo Sikoa, Bronson Reed, Johnny Gargano, Dolph Ziggler, Mustafa Ali, Damian Priest, Karrion Kross, LA Knight, Elias, Braun Strowman, Ricochet and Xavier Woods.

The women's battle royal can include Carmella, Piper Niven, Candice LeRae, Shotzi, Nikki Cross, Chelsea Green, Tegan Nox, Lacey Evans, Sonya Deville and Emma.

None of these stars should miss the card, but none of them have a clear spot at present. Instead of throwing them in matches without stakes, WWE can continue the ongoing stories with a title match on the line in the month after WrestleMania for the winner.

This could lead to an immediate boost for someone who would have normally missed the card.

Reed could immediately capitalize on the opportunity by taking the United States Championship from John Cena. Niven could be the first challenger to Asuka. WWE could even debut a fresh star in the match and get them right into title contention.
