ACC Tournament 2023: Complete Schedule and Updated Men's Bracket Predictions

Joe TanseyMar 2, 2023

If the last week of results in ACC men's basketball is an indication of things to come in Greensboro, North Carolina, the 2023 ACC tournament will be a wild ride from start to finish.

The Pittsburgh Panthers, Miami Hurricanes and Virginia Cavaliers, who are tied at 14-5 in league play, all suffered losses to unranked teams in the last week.

Pittsburgh suffered the most shocking loss out of the trio, as it fell to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Wednesday night. Notre Dame had just two conference victories going into the game.

Pittsburgh and Miami will now decide who will be the No. 1 seed in the ACC tournament on Saturday in a head-to-head battle in south Florida.

Virginia can be the No. 2 seed if it beats the Louisville Cardinals on Saturday, but it can't be the No. 1 seed because it does not have a head-to-head tiebreaker over either Pittsburgh or Miami.

The other double-bye into the quarterfinal round will go down to the Clemson Tigers and Duke Blue Devils. Clemson has the easier regular-season finale on tap. The Tigers can gain an extra day of rest on Duke before the two sides likely face off in the No. 4-versus-No. 5 game.

The rest of the field has some potentially dangerous teams in the form of the NC State Wolfpack, North Carolina Tar Heels and the reigning ACC tournament champion Virginia Tech Hokies.

Any of the lower seeds could get hot and make a run in Greensboro given the lack of a dominant team in the ACC during the regular season.

Miami holds the inside track to the No. 1 seed.

The Hurricanes welcome Pittsburgh to the Watsco Center on Saturday. They have a single loss inside their own building in ACC play, and that occurred last weekend against the Florida State Seminoles.

Miami should open the game with a little extra charge since it has had to wait a week to get back on the floor since blowing a 25-point lead against FSU.

Three of Pittsburgh's five ACC losses were on the road, and it does not bode well for the Panthers that they lost their last two road contests.

Miami also owns an edge in experience since it went to the Elite Eight in the NCAA men's basketball tournament a year ago. Pittsburgh has an experienced core, but it has not tasted success like the Canes have.

As long as Virginia beats last-place Louisville, it will slide into the No. 2 seed no matter which team wins in south Florida on Saturday. The Cavaliers can't earn the top seed because they lost to both title contenders.

Virginia will be stuck on the same side of the bracket as the Pittsburgh-Miami loser.

Tony Bennett's side could also feature on the same part of the bracket as NC State and North Carolina.

NC State will have a full week off to prepare for its challenge in Greensboro since its last regular-season game was Tuesday. Jarkel Joiner and Terquavion Smith form one of the best guard pairs in the ACC, and they could wreak havoc on the Virginia defense.

UNC will be playing desperate, as it may need another quality win to secure its spot in the NCAA tournament. ESPN's Joe Lunardi listed the Tar Heels as the first team out on his Wednesday bracket update.

The 2022 NCAA tournament runner-up can pick up a big win before Greensboro against Duke on Saturday. A win in that game might lock up the Tar Heels' spot in the field of 68.

North Carolina is the last likely ACC tournament champion on the seed list, but Virginia Tech has the potential to last a few days in Greensboro.

The Hokies won the 2022 ACC tournament with four wins in four days. They would have to replicate that feat again as a double-digit seed. A double-digit seed has not advanced to the semifinals since the ACC expanded to 15 teams for the 2014 season.

Virginia Tech, or another lower seed, could at least spoil the week for one of the top seeds fighting to improve their seeds in the NCAA tournament—or, in Clemson's case, trying to get into the Big Dance.
