2012 NFL Draft Order: Which Top 10 Teams Have the Biggest Decisions?

Tim DanielsJun 7, 2018

Now that the NFL regular season is in the books a majority of the 2012 NFL Draft order has been decided. That means teams can start scouting all of the possible prospects and begin crafting their game plan for draft day.

Here are three teams picking inside the top 10 that will be forced to make a difficult decision.

Indianapolis Colts

Ever since the Colts got off to a brutal start without Peyton Manning under center, they have been linked to Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck in mock drafts. Luck is the most highly regarded prospect since Manning and is a virtual lock to be selected first.

That obviously presents a problem for the Colts, who have watched Manning start to make progress in his recovery recently. Neither player is going to want to ride the pine and it would be tough for the Colts to dedicate that many resources in one area when they have several other holes to fill.

Right now I think the best decision would be to trade Manning to the NFC if possible. Manning will be 36 by the time next season begins so, even if he's back to full strength, his career is nearing a close. Luck can carry the franchise flag for another decade or more.

Cleveland Browns

Peyton Hillis has struggled to stay healthy throughout 2011 and is a free agent this offseason. Since nobody has stepped up in his absence, Alabama running back Trent Richardson has seemed like a logical fit for Cleveland.

Selecting a RB with the fourth pick is a risky move, however. Teams have had a lot of success with ball carriers taken in the later rounds or even undrafted free agents. So taking one early in the first round when there are other voids to fill could end up backfiring.

That said, the Browns desperately need to surround Colt McCoy with playmakers, and Oklahoma State wide receiver Justin Blackmon will likely be off the board. Richardson has all the tools to be a dynamic player at the next level and would be a solid pick.

Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins are in need of a new star quarterback to lead their franchise, but Robert Griffin III and the aforementioned Luck are likely going to be gone by the eighth overall pick. That will force Miami to make some decisions about the direction it wants to go.

Landry Jones or Ryan Tannehill are options if the Dolphins want to reach to ensure they get a QB. They could also trade down about 10 picks and hope one of those players is still available, or go in a totally different another direction.

Since there are some intriguing QB prospects that will be available later on, including Nick Foles from Arizona, the Dolphins' best move would probably be to focus on defense in the eighth slot. Quinton Coples or Nick Perry are two names to consider if their offseason workouts go as expected.
