Clippers' Updated Roster, Depth Chart After Eric Gordon, Bones Hyland Trades
The Los Angeles Clippers made a couple moves before Thursday's trade deadline to bolster their depth.
According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Clippers acquired veteran shooting guard Eric Gordon from the Houston Rockets in a three-team trade that also involved the Memphis Grizzlies. Wojnarowski also reported that Los Angeles landed point guard Bones Hyland in a trade with the Denver Nuggets and sent point guard Reggie Jackson to the Charlotte Hornets for center Mason Plumlee.
After trading away point guard John Wall and shooting guard Luke Kennard in the Gordon deal, the Clippers' updated depth chart now looks like this:
PG: Terance Mann, Bones Hyland, Jason Preston
SG: Paul George, Eric Gordon, Amir Coffey, Brandon Boston Jr.
SF: Kawhi Leonard, Norman Powell
PF: Marcus Morris Sr., Nicolas Batum, Robert Covington
C: Ivica Zubac, Mason Plumlee, Moses Brown, Moussa Diabate
Besides Sixth Man of the Year candidate Norman Powell, the Clippers bench has struggled to produce consistently. Powell is averaging 16.9 points and has become a key member of the rotation, but Wall (11.4 ppg) was the only other reserve averaging at least 10 points.
Adding Gordon and Hyland immediately solves that issue for Los Angeles, as both players are comfortable in bench roles.
Gordon, the 2016-17 Sixth Man of the Year, has started in all 47 of his appearances this season for a young Rockets team and is averaging 13.1 points per game. Hyland, the 26th overall pick in 2021, has started only one game in 42 appearances this season and is averaging 12.1 points and 3.0 assists.
The Western Conference became even more competitive after the Phoenix Suns acquired Kevin Durant and the Dallas Mavericks landed Kyrie Irving this week. While the Clippers' acquisitions weren't as flashy, they were necessary moves for the team to maintain its position in the playoff race.
The Clippers (31-27) will bring their new-look roster into Friday's matchup against the Milwaukee Bucks (37-17).
