Report: Josh Richardson Traded to Pelicans from Spurs for Devonte' Graham, 4 Picks

Rob GoldbergFeb 9, 2023

The New Orleans Pelicans added veteran guard Josh Richardson in a trade with the San Antonio Spurs, according to Shams Charania of Stadium and The Athletic.

The Spurs will receive point guard Devonte' Graham and four second-round picks, per Charania.

Richardson is averaging 11.5 points and 3.3 assists per game this year for San Antonio, mostly coming off the bench in 42 appearances.

The 29-year-old has been valuable on both ends of the court during his career, averaging double-digit points for the seventh straight year across five different organizations. The Spurs acquired Richardson last February in the deal that sent Derrick White to the Boston Celtics.

San Antonio has struggled as a team this year, entering Thursday with the third-worst record in the NBA at 14-41, but the squad was plus-5.4 points per 100 possessions with Richardson on the court compared to off it, per Basketball Reference.

Richardson will look to add depth to the Pelicans, a team currently in the mix for a play-in spot at 29-27.

New Orleans has an elite starting lineup when healthy, but depth has been an issue throughout the year. Richardson represents an upgrade over Graham and Dyson Daniels in the backcourt, while giving the team another wing option alongside Naji Marshall.

Graham gets a fresh start after a miserable 2022-23 season in which he's averaging just 5.3 points per game.

The 27-year-old burst onto the NBA scene in 2019-20 when he averaged 18.2 points and 7.5 assists with the Charlotte Hornets. He joined New Orleans two years later in a sign-and-trade, but his production has declined each season.

The guard has seen a reduced role this year and has struggled in his limited playing time, shooting just 36.8 percent from the field. Graham is owed $24.75 million over the next two seasons.
