Mavs' Jason Kidd After Kyrie Irving Trade: 'We Understand' This Is Luka Dončić's Team
To hear Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd tell it, there won't be much controversy about who is the No. 1 option on the team even after the trade for Kyrie Irving.
"We understand this is Luka [Dončić]'s team," Kidd told reporters Tuesday. "It will be Luka's team. ... Now we have improved the roster where somebody else can handle the ball."
Being the second option won't be anything new for Irving. He played with LeBron James on the Cleveland Cavaliers and Kevin Durant and James Harden when he was on the Brooklyn Nets.
Irving hit one of the most famous shots in NBA history to help Cleveland win Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals over the Golden State Warriors when he was the second option to James and will look to help the Mavericks make a similar playoff run this season alongside Dončić.
Dallas needed another go-to playmaker considering Dončić is second in the league in usage rate, per NBA.com. The Dončić-Irving backcourt is arguably the top one in the league, and the Mavs have enough talent to perhaps challenge the Western Conference's top teams in the postseason.
And it sounds like Dončić will get the final shot if those playoff games come down to the last moments.
