Kessler Edwards Traded to Kings from Nets; Brooklyn Saves $8M, Opens Roster Spot

Rob GoldbergFeb 7, 2023

After the blockbuster trade that sent Kyrie Irving to the Dallas Mavericks, the Brooklyn Nets remained active ahead of Thursday's trade deadline, trading Kessler Edwards and cash considerations to the Sacramento Kings in exchange for the draft rights to David Michineau.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski noted the benefits of the deal for Brooklyn:

Edwards has seen limited playing time with the Nets during his second season, averaging 1.1 points in 14 NBA appearances.

The 22-year-old played six minutes in Monday's loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, his first appearance with the team since Dec. 10, but finished with no points or rebounds on 0-of-2 shooting.

Edwards also spent time in the G League this year, averaging 11.5 points and 6.0 rebounds across 10 games with the Long Island Nets.

According to Wojnarowski, Sacramento also plans to use the 2021 second-round pick in the G League with the Stockton Kings, although his future is "fluid" ahead of the deadline.

The Kings already have a quality rotation that has lifted the team to third in the Western Conference, but the young talent could be an impact addition down the line with one more year of team control before becoming a restricted free agent in 2024.

Brooklyn, meanwhile, will have more roster flexibility before the deadline.

The team added Spencer Dinwiddie and Dorian Finney-Smith in exchange for Irving, while Marc Stein reported the Nets haven't ruled out flipping Dinwiddie in another trade.
