Super Bowl 2023: Chiefs vs. Eagles Box Score and Stats Predictions

Kristopher KnoxFeb 8, 2023

Super Bowl LVII promises to be a thrilling contest between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles. While the two contestants appear, on the surface, to have very contrasting styles, there are some similarities.

Yes, the Eagles feature a run-heavy offense and one of the best defenses in the league, while the Chiefs are a little more pass-oriented and more opportunistic than dominant defensively. However, both teams are capable of winning via the run or the pass, and each features a legitimate star at quarterback.

Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts are two of the best at their position, and they'll do a lot to decide the outcome of Sunday's game.

It may be cliche, but whichever quarterback delivers the most big-moment plays while making the fewest mistakes will likely lead his team to victory. With elite defenders and top-tier skill players surrounding both quarterbacks, this one has the potential to create many memorable moments.

Here are some predictions for Super Bowl LVII.

The Eagles defense finished the regular season ranked second in yards allowed and eighth in points allowed. It also logged a whopping 70 sacks and 17 interceptions. While the Kansas City defense was less impressive (11th in yards, 16th in points), defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo's unit is aggressive.

Kansas City logged 55 sacks in the regular season and had seven sacks and four takeaways in two postseason games.

Expect the scoring to start slowly, as the two quarterbacks and head coaches Andy Reid and Nick Sirianni try to figure out the opposing defenses. The prediction here is a one-score first quarter and a mild first half—something like 13-10 in favor of Kansas City.

Reid is a master of adjustment and opponent-specific game-planning—which is why he has a 27-4 record after bye weeks—so an explosive third quarter could lead to a double-digit lead for the Chiefs.

However, Philadelphia will find its footing in the fourth, exploiting Kansas City's 20th-ranked defense. Philly's ferocious pass rush will stymie Mahomes down the stretch, turning a 23-13 third-quarter Chiefs lead into a game that goes down to the wire.

Some of the more notable Super Bowl props include over/unders of 1.5 passing touchdowns for both Hurts and Mahomes. Chiefs rookie running back Isiah Pacheco has an over/under of 48.5 rushing yards, while Eagles starting back Miles Sanders has an O/U of 60.5 yards. However, the prediction here is that Kenneth Gainwell (O/U of 19.5 yards) actually outpaces Sanders.

A.J. Brown has an over/under of 71.5 receiving yards, while Travis Kelce has an O/U of 79.5 yards. For some reason, pass-rushers Chris Jones and Haason Reddick have over/unders of 0.25 sacks, meaning a half-sack will allow them to hit the over.

Stat Predictions

Patrick Mahomes: 27-of-38 for 285 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT

Jalen Hurts: 23-of-34 for 220 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs

Isiah Pacheco: 16 carries for 83 yards, 2 TDs

Kenneth Gainwell: 11 carries for 50 yards

A.J. Brown: 6 receptions for 92 yards

Travis Kelce: 7 receptions for 85 yards

Chris Jones: 5 tackles, 1 sack, 1 FF

Haason Reddick: 3 tackles, 1.5 sacks

Quarterback play will dictate much of how this matchup unfolds, and both signal-callers should be about as healthy as they can be at this point in the postseason. Hurts missed time in December with a shoulder injury but has appeared close to 100 percent in his playoff appearances.

Mahomes has been dealing with an ankle injury since the divisional round, but there's no doubt that he'll play on Sunday.

"I'll play through all injuries that the trainers will let me play through," Mahomes said, per NFL.com's Bobby Kownack. "That's the list. As long as the trainers are OK for me to get out there, I'm going to play through it."

Expect Mahomes to make a few clutch plays late, as he did against the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC title game. However, the real difference in this game might be the running of Pacheco, Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Jerick McKinnon.

For as good as Philadelphia's defense has been, it has occasionally struggled against the run. The Eagles ranked 16th in rushing yards allowed but only 24th in yards per carry allowed. Expect Kansas City to be as run-heavy as it has been all season.

That will keep Philadelphia's defense honest and give Mahomes a chance at another epic comeback after the Eagles take a late fourth-quarter lead.

Prediction: Chiefs 30, Eagles 27
