ESPN: Nets' Ben Simmons 'Has Zero Trade Value' in NBA After Kyrie Irving-Mavs Deal

Rob GoldbergFeb 6, 2023

The Brooklyn Nets might have to start a rebuild after dealing away Kyrie Irving, but Ben Simmons could be difficult to move.

ESPN's Bobby Marks said Monday on Keyshawn, JWill and Max that Simmons has no trade value right now around the league (h/t Nick Friedell of ESPN).

That could give the Nets limited options to improve the team ahead of Thursday's trade deadline.

Kevin Durant, who already requested a trade last offseason, could be the next to move on from the Nets. Kristian Winfield of the New York Daily News reported Durant "has been less than enthralled with Simmons."

Simmons was one of the league's most valuable players earlier in his career, averaging 15.9 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.7 assists and 1.7 steals per game across four seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers. He earned three All-Star selections and was twice named first-team All-Defense.

In 2020-21, Simmons received a few votes for MVP.

Following a disastrous 2021 postseason, Simmons requested a trade from the 76ers. They were seeking a star in return such as Damian Lillard, Bradley Beal or Jaylen Brown.

The Nets finally acquired Simmons in a deal that sent James Harden to Philadelphia.

Simmons has been nothing short of a disappointment since joining the Nets. He missed all of last year after the midseason trade due to a back injury, while he's been a shell of his former self on the court this year. He entered Monday averaging 7.4 points, 6.5 rebounds and 6.4 assists per game, all of which are career lows.

With over $78.2 million owed to him over the next two seasons, the 26-year-old doesn't appear to be worth the risk for teams in potential trades. Brooklyn might need to attach other assets to get rid of Simmons, and even that could be a stretch based on his salary and limited on-court impact.
