NBA Rumors: Bojan Bogdanović 'the Primary Topic of' Pistons' Trade Talks with Rivals

Tyler ConwayFeb 5, 2023

Bojan Bogdanović is reportedly the "primary topic of conversation" in trade talks for the Detroit Pistons ahead of Thursday's deadline.

James L. Edwards III of The Athletic reported Bogdanović continues to garner calls from opposing teams who hope to pry the veteran swingman from Detroit. The Pistons are not "guaranteed" to be sellers despite their 14-40 record and have seemingly set a high price on landing Bogdanović.

NBA insider Marc Stein reported Detroit is currently leaning toward retaining him past the deadline. Bogdanović also recently indicated he believes he'll be part of the club's long-term future.

"Having conversations with the club, [general manager] Troy (Weaver), and the owners, they assured me that we're going to be great next year," he told HoopsHype's Michael Scotto. "We have a lot of cap space to sign great players. We're going to have a high pick again, so that's going to help us a lot. We have a great young group of guys. When Cade (Cunningham) went down, that kind of hurt us big time. We were thinking that maybe we'd be fighting for the play-in tournament, but when he went down, he was our main guy. All of our offensive strategies were connected to him. When he went down, our season, we've had a lot of ups and downs without him."

Bogdanović is in the midst of a career-best season, averaging 21.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists while shooting 41.9 percent from three-point range. His borderline All-Star play as he approaches his 34th birthday made him a seemingly obvious trade candidate. The Pistons are going nowhere this season, and Bogdanović's age trajectory is in complete contrast with Detroit's youth-laden roster.

That said, it appears the front office is dedicated to splurging in free agency this summer before rookie extensions for the remainder of the roster start creeping onto their cap. Bogdanović is under contract through the 2024-25 season, and the final year of his deal does not fully guarantee until June 2024. Given his play this season, the extension he signed in October has been a bargain.
