5 Most Likely Matches to End Up on WWE WrestleMania 39 Card

Doc-Chris MuellerFeb 5, 2023

We are officially on the Road to WrestleMania 39, which means it's time to start making predictions about what will end up on the show.

This year's event has a lot of storylines already set up to conclude at the pay-per-view. The Royal Rumble winners have already earned their spots, but there are plenty of other matches to book.

Mania has been a two-night event for the past several years, so this year should be no different. That means WWE will likely have at least a dozen bouts to book across both nights, maybe more. Last year's show had a total of 16 contests, so we should expect something similar.

While some matches may seem set in stone, there are several that are undecided. Let's take a look at five bouts that are most likely going to end up on the card for WrestleMania 39.

Since we already know Charlotte vs. Rhea Ripley and Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns are all but certain inclusions already, we will keep those off this list.

The Usos vs. Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn

1 of 5

While a lot of fans would love to see Sami Zayn be the one to finally dethrone Reigns for the Undisputed Universal Championship, it feels like WWE is saving that honor for Rhodes.

Right now, the most logical way for this to go would be for Zayn and Kevin Owens to reunite, squash their beef and go after The Usos and the tag titles.

Jey Uso's status with The Bloodline is uncertain, but he and Jimmy still have two sets of belts to defend. Braun Strowman and Ricochet will get a shot at the SmackDown tag belts, but the Raw titles are there for the taking.

Whether Owens and Zayn challenge just for the Raw titles or both sets doesn't really matter. What matters is that this match will allow several threads of this storyline to be tied up into a neat little bow.

The only way this doesn't happen is if Jey decides to turn against his family. That would likely lead to Jey vs. Jimmy at 'Mania instead.

However, there's a way WWE can have its cake and eat it, too. If Jey and Jimmy drop the belts to KO and Zayn on night one and then get into a fight, WWE could book them in a singles match for night two. There are a lot of ways this can still go, but the tag match seems like the best direction to take.

Gunther vs. Sheamus vs. Drew McIntyre

2 of 5

The Intercontinental Championship has been one of the focal points of SmackDown for several months, thanks to a dominant reign by GUNTHER, but that isn't going to last forever.

The current champion has been able to survive the likes of Braun Strowman, The Celtic Warrior and many more, but his successes have mostly come in singles matches.

Putting him in the ring with two men like Sheamus and Drew McIntyre might be the only way to get that belt from around his waist, but that's only if Sheamus and McIntyre don't kill each other first.

The frenemies have been allies and opponents so many times that it's getting hard to keep track of their history, but the one constant has always been their love of fighting.

Putting these three European powerhouses in the ring together is probably going to top the show, so WWE should do it on night one so it doesn't steal the thunder away from Reigns vs. Rhodes.

Bianca Belair vs. Asuka

3 of 5

With Ripley declaring her intention to challenge Charlotte for the SmackDown Women's Championship right away, Bianca Belair's WrestleMania opponent is still up in the air.

Right now, WWE has a match booked at Elimination Chamber with the winner earning a shot at The EST's Raw women's title. The competitors announced as of Sunday morning are Liv Morgan, Raquel Rodriguez, Nikki Cross, Natalya, Asuka and a final competitor that will be determined before the PPV.

Out of those choices, Asuka is the best option to take on Belair for several reasons. The most obvious point in her favor is that she is in the midst of a return push and slight repackage.

She is still the same Asuka with the same history in WWE, but her new attitude and face paint seems to indicate a return to her personality from when she was known as Kana in Japan.

Belair has had a great run, but if WWE ever wanted to make Asuka into a huge star, this is the time to do it. She has a ton of momentum after having a well-received return at The Royal Rumble, and she is one of the few people on the roster who is believably tough enough to take down Belair without any help.

This match is not a lock yet, but it seems all but certain based on the lineup and the story WWE wants to tell.

Dominik Mysterio vs. Rey Mysterio

4 of 5

The fight between father and son has been building for so long at this point that if WWE doesn't put Rey and Dominik Mysterio in the ring at WrestleMania, people are going to be angry.

Even if Dom is not your cup of tea, you at least have to see why WWE has invested so much time into this storyline. It's not often we get to see a father who is still capable of having a great match battle with his son who is still new to the business. This fight won't be about sentons and hurricanranas. It's going to be all about the emotion and drama of the situation.

Rey is never going to give up on reconciling with his son, but 'Mania might be where we finally see him dish out a little fatherly payback for everything Dom and Judgment Day have put the Mysterio family through.

The change to Dom's personality has had a mixed response. Some people hate it, some people love it, and some people like it ironically. No matter where you fall on that spectrum, you can't deny that WWE has to get their money's worth out of all the time and effort put into this program.

With Ripley being busy with her own match, she might not have much of a presence here, which would leave Dom much less prepared to face his veteran father.

AJ Styles vs. Finn Bálor

5 of 5

AJ Styles is currently sidelined with a broken ankle, but if he is healed up and ready to go before 'Mania, there is a good chance WWE reignites The OC's feud with Judgment Day.

If that does happen, pitting Bálor and Styles in a battle of the stable leaders is something WWE probably won't pass up, even if we have seen this particular match before.

WrestleMania is a time for WWE to pull out all the stops to book the most exciting show possible, and few matches would live up to the level of excitement produced by this one.

WWE can make all the vague allusions to The Bullet Club it wants because most fans are familiar with the group in some way, so their history as leaders of the BC is easy to find.

Damian Priest will probably be involved, so The Good Brothers would be there to offset his presence. Unless the plan is for Edge to keep his feud with Judgment Day going all the way until 'Mania, Styles feels like Bálor's best bet for an opponent.

These five matches all seem like logical inclusions, but WWE has a big card to fill. What do you think we will see at this year's WrestleMania?
