WWE NXT Vengeance Day 2023 Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights

Doc-Chris MuellerFeb 4, 2023

Welcome to Bleacher Report's coverage and recap of NXT Vengeance Day 2023.

WWE packed the card with five title bouts and a 2-out-of-3 falls match. Here is a look at the card for Saturday's show:

  • Kayden Carter and Katana Chance vs. Fallon Henley and Kiana James (NXT Women's Tag Team Championships)
  • Apollo Crews vs. Carmelo Hayes
  • Roxanne Perez vs. Gigi Dolin vs. Jacy Jayne (NXT Women's Championship)
  • The New Day vs. Gallus vs. Pretty Deadly vs. Chase University (NXT Tag Team Championships)
  • Wes Lee vs. Dijak (NXT North American Championship)
  • Bron Breakker vs. Grayson Waller (NXT Championship)

Let's take a look at what happened at Saturday's show.

Wes Lee vs. Dijak

1 of 6

The first match of the night saw Wes Lee defend the North American Championship against Dijak.

At first, Lee tried to sucker Dijak in by pretending to lie down for him. But when the big man went for a cover, Lee kicked him right in the head.

For most of the match, Dijak was dominating his smaller opponent while Lee would make a comeback every few minutes to hit a few big moves.

This bout was a lot of fun and definitely the right choice to start the show. The crowd was hyped, the Superstars looked great, and the result was one of the least predictable of the night.

Tony D'Angelo and Stacks showed up to interfere, but Dijak took them out with a moonsault. The distraction allowed Lee to take advantage and hit his finisher to score the win.

Winner: Wes Lee

Grade: B+

Notable Moments and Observations

  • The Death Valley Driver Dijak hit on the floor looked brutal.Ā
  • Lee's German suplex was an impressive display of power.Ā
  • The reverse rana was good but looked a bit clunky.Ā
  • Dijak almost spiked his head on the mat when Lee reversed a powerbomb into a hurricanrana.Ā
  • They showed a closeup of Dijak's broken finger. A lot of people probably cringed at seeing that.Ā

Carter and Chance vs. James and Henley (NXT Women's Tag Titles)

2 of 6

The women's tag titles were on the line in the night's second match with Chance and Carter defending the belts against the frenemies, James and Henley.

James and Carter started for their teams with a basic lockup. Carter taunted the cowboys at ringside to anger James.

The story of this match was Henley and James having communication issues because they don't get along, but both women still wanted to win the match.

This bout had some fun spots, but it was also all over the place. It felt like they tried to pack a little too much into the time they had, so a few spots felt rushed.

Henley ended up covering Carter close to the ropes, so James held Carter's legs down to keep her pinned without Henley's knowledge.

Winners: Kiana James and Fallon Henley

Grade: C+

Notable Moments and Observations

  • Carter taunting Briggs and Jensen was kind of funny.Ā
  • Briggs and Jenson had hilarious facial expressions during this bout.Ā
  • They are definitely going to have Henley get mad when she finds out James cheated for them.Ā

Apollo Crews vs. Carmelo Hayes

3 of 6

The 2-out-of-4 falls match fell third on the card with Crews and Hayes squaring off.

These two men are both gifted technicians and high-flyers, so they started with a fast-paced exchange of holds and takedowns.

This match had too much action to properly recap here, but what you need to know is that this will likely end up being the Match of the Night for most people. These guys are both at the top of their game, so that shouldn't surprise anyone.

While there was no official stipulation, this felt like an unofficial No. 1 Contender's match. Whoever came away with the W will likely face the champion at the next big show.

Toward the end of the second fall, Dabba Kato, fka Commander Azeez, showed up to prevent Trick Williams from interfering, but that didn't stop Hayes from scoring the second straight fall to win the match 2-0.

Kato got into the ring and looked like he would help Crews up, but he ended up attacking his former ally and dropping him on a chair with a two-handed chokeslam.

Booking the match to go 2-0 was a very intentional decision to make Hayes look good before he pursues the NXT title again.

Winner: Carmela Hayes

Grade: A-

Notable Moments and Observations

  • Melo's titantron video is hypnotizing.Ā
  • If WWE calls up Melo without Williams by his side, it will be a huge mistake.Ā
  • Crews should lose the red contact lenses. They just look weird.Ā
  • A standing shooting star press will always be impressive.Ā

NXT Tag Team Championship Fatal 4-Way

4 of 6

Pretty Deadly, Chase University, Gallus and The New Day took part in a Fatal 4-Way match for the NXT Tag Team Championships.

Matches with eight competitors are almost always going to be chaotic, but when it's four teams instead of two, it's even harder to follow all the action.

All four teams were clearly working hard to make this as fun as possible. While the match was hard to follow at times, it definitely had enough exciting moments to keep most fans entertained.

Surprisingly, The New Day did not leave this match with their NXT title reign intact. Gallus was able to score the win to become the new tag team champions. This was a fun outing that most people will probably have to watch again to make sure they caught everything.

Winners: Gallus

Grade: B-

Notable Moments and Observations

  • Pretty Deadly's ring jackets were great.Ā
  • The New Day easily got the biggest pop during the official introductions.Ā
  • Thea Hail is the best part of Chase U and should be featured in more segments and matches. She's so entertaining.Ā
  • The superplex onto a pile of wrestlers at ringside looked great, and that's a spot that usually looks too contrived.Ā Ā

Roxanne Perez vs. Gigi Dolin vs. Jacy Jayne (NXT Women's Title)

5 of 6

Going into the Triple Threat match for the NXT women's title, Perez was at a disadvantage because Jayne and Dolin were still trying to work as a unit despite the fact that only one woman can win in the end.

For a long time, Toxic Attraction worked together against Perez, but the former Rok-C was able to find ways to use the numbers game against them to keep herself in the fight.

As soon as Jayne tried to get a pin while Dolin was outside the ring, they began to argue. Dolin pulled her into the way of a suicide dive from Perez and then began beating the champion down.

After putting Dolin through a table at ringside, Perez hit a Code Red from the turnbuckle on Jayne to score the pin and retain her title in an entertaining and energetic match.

Winner: Roxanne Perez

Grade: B+

Notable Moments and Observations

  • Dolin and Jayne making their entrance together was a nice detail to add.Ā
  • Jayne hit a kick to Perez at one point that looked a little stiff, but the champ recovered right away.Ā
  • Dolin has some of the best facial expressions. You always know exactly how she's feeling.Ā Ā

Bron Breakker vs. Grayson Waller (NXT Championship)

6 of 6

The main event of the night was the Steel Cage match between Breakker and Waller for the NXT Championship.

Waller slammed Breakker off the apron with the cage door before the match began, but as soon as they were both in the ring, the champion took control.

However, Waller used the environment and the damage he already caused to find ways to get the upper hand. As time went on, it seemed like Waller found his groove and began to dictate the pace a bit more.

As he became more desperate, Waller started taking bigger risks. He climbed all the way to the top of the cage, but when Breakker stood up, Waller tried to climb back down.

The champ ended up hitting a huge Spear with a running start to get the win after Waller defiantly slapped him in the face. This was a solid effort from both men, but they felt slightly hampered by the stipulation

Hayes came out on the stage to end the show, indicating that he intends to be the next challenger for the title.

Winner: Bron Breakker

Grade: B

Notable Moments and Observations

  • Scott Steiner is going to sue Waller for gimmick infringement for wearing the chainmail hood.Ā
  • They are running out of ideas for things for Breakker to break on his way to the ring. This time, he stepped through a banner of Waller that was already cut down the middle.Ā
  • WWE got rid of the rule where somebody can escape the cage to win for this match, so every time Waller tried to climb the wall, it was only in an attempt to get away from Breakker.Ā
  • Waller hit a cool move that was like a combination of killswitch and blockbuster.Ā
  • Tying Breakker up in the ropes to deliver a spear was a great move by Waller.Ā
