Broncos' Super Bowl 58 Odds Shift Significantly After Reported Sean Payton Trade

While they're still far from favorites, the Denver Broncos saw their Super Bowl betting odds dramatically improve with the news they're hiring Sean Payton as their next head coach.

Denver is +2800 at DraftKings Sportsbook to win Super Bowl LVIII. That's up from +4000 before the team had concluded its coaching search.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported the Broncos agreed to a trade Tuesday with the New Orleans Saints that cleared a path for them to hire Payton. The Saints still had his contract rights, so any team targeting him had to negotiate a deal with New Orleans.

The Broncos' outlook for 2023 is undoubtedly better with Payton at the helm, but giving them the ninth-best odds might be a tad optimistic. The team won five games, has somewhat limited draft capital, and is projected to be just $12 million under the salary cap, per Spotrac.

So much of Denver's fortunes will hinge on the performance of Russell Wilson. The 34-year-old is coming off the worst season of his career by far, throwing for 3,524 yards, 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while getting sacked an NFL-high 55 times.

Nobody expected Wilson to fall off so dramatically, but the warning signs of an impending decline were there in 2021.

Payton might be just the guy to get the nine-time Pro Bowler back to something approaching his best. If that were to happen, maybe the Broncos can challenge the Kansas City Chiefs for AFC supremacy.

Absent that turnaround from Wilson, their early Super Bowl odds could look well out of step with the final outcome of the 2023 season.
