49ers Fans Stunned After Brock Purdy, QB Injuries Derail Season in Loss to Eagles

San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Brock Purdy had his magical run come to an end under unfortunate circumstances in Sunday's NFC Championship loss against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Purdy suffered an elbow injury on San Francisco's opening possession and was forced to exit the game. However, when backup Josh Johnson suffered a concussion early in the third quarter, the 23-year-old was forced to re-enter the game without the ability to throw the ball down the field.

With a compromised quarterback, the 49ers went on to suffer a 31-7 loss at Lincoln Financial Field. Purdy completed all four of his passes for just 23 yards, while Johnson threw for 74 yards before his exit. San Francisco's run game suffered in the one-dimensional offense, as the team totaled just 81 yards on the ground. Star running back Christian McCaffrey, who was the team's emergency quarterback, scored the team's lone touchdown.

The injuries to Purdy and Johnson in a conference championship game capped a disastrous quarterback situation throughout the 2022 season for the 49ers.

San Francisco began the year starting second-year QB Trey Lance before he broke his ankle in Week 2, forcing the the team to turn to longtime backup Jimmy Garoppolo. While he was a stabilizing force for a while, Garoppolo eventually went down with a broken foot, thrusting Purdy into action.

The 49ers enter the offseason with questions as to who will be their quarterback of the future. Lance was the No. 3 overall pick in 2021, but he hasn't been on the field long enough to prove himself as a franchise cornerstone.

On the other hand, Purdy displayed the ability to be a reliable starter when he took over for Garoppolo. The 2022 seventh-round pick looks like a gem who has no problems leading the San Francisco offense.

After Sunday's loss, it's clear that the 49ers will need to ensure both the starting and backup quarterback positions are solidified if they hope to make it one step further next season and achieve their goal of making it to the Super Bowl.
