Australian Open 2023: Updated Prize Money Payouts from Melbourne

Joe TanseyJan 29, 2023

Novak Djokovic won his 10th Australian Open title and 22nd overall Grand Slam singles tournament on Sunday.

The 35-year-old Serbian collected the first-place purse of $2,071,000 through his straight-set victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas. That is the same amount that was awarded to women's singles champion Aryna Sabalenka on Saturday.

Djokovic moved back on level terms with Rafael Nadal for the most Grand Slams singles titles won by any man. Nadal had a two-title edge over Djokovic before Wimbledon last year.

Djokovic has won two of the last three major championships and he looked as dominant as ever inside Rod Laver Arena on Sunday.

The fourth-seeded player won four of his last five Australian Open titles in three sets. In twenty Australian Open matches from the semifinal stage onwards, the Serbian has won every encounter.

Tsitsipas became the sixth player to lose to Djokovic in a final in Melbourne. He will come away with $1.12 million in prize money as the runner-up.

Djokovic has defeated Andy Murray four times, Nadal twice and Tsitsipas, Daniil Medvedev, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Dominic Thiem once in his final triumphs at Melbourne Park.

Rarely has Djokovic lost in a Grand Slam final over the last five years. He collected the first-place prize money from 10 of his last 12 championship matches.

Sunday's title clash was one of the easier victories earned by Djokovic. He took the first set by a 6-3 score and then controlled consecutive set tiebreaks to clinch the match.

Djokovic now has three chances to win multiple Slams in 2023. He won two championships in 2018 and 2019 and three championships in 2021.

The Serbian followed up five of his nine previous Australian Open wins with an additional Grand Slam. After winning the 2021 Australian Open title, Djokovic came close to winning all four Grand Slams in the same year, losing the U.S. Open final to Daniil Medvedev. Djokovic will now look to be the first male player since Rod Laver in 1969 to complete the achievement

Nadal will be his biggest threat at the French Open, having won a record 14 French Open titles at Roland Garros. The Spaniard will have to return to full fitness ahead of the clay-court season, with the 22-time major winner exiting in the second round in Melbourne after he suffered a hip injury.

Carlos Alcaraz, who missed the Australian Open with an injury, could be another threat to Djokovic's quest to hold the record for most Grand Slam singles titles won by a man. The Spaniard won the 2021 U.S. Open and could have been a finalist alongside Djokovic if healthy.

Tsitsipas, Daniil Medvedev and Casper Ruud are among the other potential challengers to Djokovic leaving the next three majors with the winner's purse. All three players reached multiple major finals in the last three years, and Medvedev won in New York two years ago.
