Bron Breakker Beats Grayson Waller to Retain NXT Title at Vengeance Day 2023

Bron Breakker beat Grayson Waller in a steel cage match at NXT Vengeance Day on Saturday to retain the NXT Championship.

The event represented the culmination of a two-month rivalry that began when Waller beat out Carmelo Hayes, Joe Gacy, Axiom and JD McDonagh to win the Iron Survivor Challenge match at NXT Deadline.

That victory established the 32-year-old as the No. 1 contender for the NXT Championship, and he quickly went to work on attempting to get under Breakker's skin ahead of their title match.

At New Year's Evil on Jan. 10, he challenged the champion for the title. Waller seemingly had Breakker right where he wanted him when the unthinkable happened and cost him the win.

Waller went to the top rope in an effort to finish off Breakker, but the rope broke, which sent the Australian spilling to the outside. Unable to get back up and in the ring, he was counted out and the titleholder retained.

NXT booker Shawn Michaels stepped in to figure out a palatable solution for all parties involved and decided to set the rematch for Vengeance Day.

In an effort to prevent any shenanigans from occurring, the NXT head of creative made it a steel cage match, much to the delight of Breakker, who felt Waller was ducking him for much of their feud.

With their rematch set, Waller went back to his strategy of getting inside Breakker's head, and he did so by interrupting his training session at the WWE Performance Center and starting a brawl.

On the ensuing episode of NXT TV, a furious Breakker attempted to get his hands on his rival again, resulting in backstage personnel having to separate them.

Waller entered Vengeance Day attempting to use Breakker's aggressiveness against him, but it worked to the titleholder's advantage on Saturday, as he finally took down Waller and retained the NXT Championship.
