NFL Rumors: Sean Payton 'Still a Possibility' for Cardinals After Broncos Rumors

Adam WellsJan 27, 2023

As he remains in the mix for the Denver Broncos' top job, Sean Payton is a potentially viable option for the Arizona Cardinals as they search for a new head coach.

Appearing on The Pat McAfee Show (starts at 2:00 mark), NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said the Cardinals are "still a possibility" for Payton

Cameron Cox of 12 News posted a series of videos on Twitter yesterday of Payton at the Cardinals' facilities meeting with team owner Michael Bidwell.

It was Payton's first in-person meeting with the Cardinals. The 59-year-old previously confirmed that he was going to have interviews with the Broncos, Houston Texans and the Carolina Panthers.

The Panthers are the only team in that group that has hired a head coach. Frank Reich, who was fired by the Indianapolis Colts in November, agreed to terms with Carolina on Thursday.

Rapoport noted the Texans haven't scheduled a second interview and it "does not feel like there's any momentum" for Payton with that job.

Jeff Duncan of the Times-Picayune reported Payton was going to fly to Denver this week for a second meeting with the Broncos and there is "strong" interest between the two sides.

Per Mike Klis of 9News, the Broncos also consider San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans to be a top candidate.

Payton's status is complicated because the New Orleans Saints still own his contractual rights and are expected to require at least a first-round pick to trade him.

The Cardinals currently own the No. 3 pick in the 2023 NFL draft. They are looking for a new head coach after firing Kliff Kingsbury on Jan. 9. The move came after Arizona finished this season with a 4-13 record.
