49ers vs. Eagles: Updated Odds, Predictions for NFC Championship Game 2023

Maurice BobbJan 27, 2023

Just based on the numbers, there is no hotter team in the NFL than the San Francisco 49ers.

They won 10 straight to end the regular season and were victorious in both games in the playoffs to get to the NFC Championship Game this Sunday.

Led by first-team All-Pro defensive end Nick Bosa, who finished the year as the NFL leader in sacks with 18.5, the 49ers have the best defense in the league.

Bosa's a proven player, so that's no surprise.

What is surprising is that their starting quarterback, Brock Purdy, is a rookie. He was thrown into the starting lineup in Week 13 and hasn't lost a game since.

Purdy will be going head-to-head with Jalen Hurts, the Philadelphia Eagles QB who has had his own great year under center.

Hurts' MVP-caliber season has spurred the Eagles to a 14-3 record, good enough to tie for the best in the NFL.

Philly will host San Francisco this weekend at Lincoln Financial Field, and all eyes will be on both signal callers.

The oddsmakers have the Eagles as the 2.5-point favorite to win it, which is likely based on how well Hurts has looked since returning from that shoulder injury and the fact that the 49ers have to try to win on the road.

If the home team can get out front early, it will force the away team to go to the air more than it would like to, giving the former the advantage.

Can Purdy be the first rookie QB to win a conference championship and start in a Super Bowl?

Or is this the year Hurts makes that final leap into the ultimate winner?

Here are the latest odds and a prediction as fans get ready to tune in to Sunday's exciting matchup.

San Francisco will have the biggest-name players on the field this Sunday.

Christian McCaffrey's a gamer, as is Deebo Samuel, George Kittle and Nick Bosa.

That said, Philadelphia has the more cohesive team that relies on synergy rather than big-time playmakers.

Don't let that detract from Hurts' dual-threat ability to set the tone for his team, though.

Led by Hurts, the Eagles were third in rush attempts this season while coming in 23rd in pass attempts.

That's because Hurts is in his element on designed runs, and that opens up the offense.

He'll have to watch out for Bosa and company because the 49ers have been number one against the run all year.

San Francisco also hasn't allowed any 100-yard rushing games all season.

That could prove problematic for an Eagles team that relies heavily on the run behind Hurts, Kenneth Gainwell, Miles Sanders and Boston Scott.

On the other side of the ball, Purdy will need to play within himself and avoid any big mistakes.

For the Niners to win, Purdy will have to deliver at least two highlight-worthy plays to keep the offense on par with the team's defense.

Expect McCaffrey to have a big game, as well as Bosa for San Francisco.

But this game is in Philly, and it'll be A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith making big plays and helping Hurts live up to those lofty Michael Jordan comparisons.

The Eagles should win this and go on to Glendale, Arizona.

Prediction: Eagles 27, 49ers 17
