Ranking the Most Likely Heel and Face Turns at WWE Extreme Rules 2022

Kevin BergeOct 5, 2022

WWE Extreme Rules 2022 has the chance to live up to its name on Saturday night. With so many interesting stipulation matches, anything could happen.

As Triple H continues to shift the product, shows like this can be used to set up major moments, with particular focus on matches fans will be keen to see.

The card includes several exciting bouts with unclear results. Liv Morgan vs. Ronda Rousey, Bianca Belair vs. Bayley, and Edge vs. Finn Bálor could all be decided by a surprise turn.

From Alexa Bliss to AJ Styles, these are the most likely face and heel turns to come at Extreme Rules.

Heel: Ronda Rousey (or Liv Morgan)

1 of 4

Ronda Rousey has been hinting at a heel turn for months, dating back to her first match with Liv Morgan.

The former UFC star has lost twice to Morgan and shown an aggressive streak when near the underdog SmackDown women's champion.

In recent months, Rousey has been teaming with Shayna Baszler at house shows, a move that would only be logical on TV if one of the two women turns.

They could be dangerous allies as heels or faces, but what would make the most sense at this time is a heel turn for The Baddest Woman on the Planet.

Morgan may be the underdog against Rousey, but she has also defeated her most dangerous rival twice. That has to weigh on the challenger going into an Extreme Rules match in which anything goes.

It would be easy for Rousey to recruit Baszler to make sure she defeats Morgan and takes the title back. Together, the two would become a dominant force on SmackDown.

Heel: AJ Styles

2 of 4

AJ Styles has had an entirely forgettable 2022. After his team with Omos dissolved, he had a strong showing in the men's Royal Rumble match and two solid contests with Edge that set the foundation for The Judgment Day.

He is still stuck dealing the heel stable without much direction of his own. The only way WWE can salvage this year for The Phenomenal One would be to pull off something truly dramatic.

This week's WWE Raw showed how frustrated Styles has gotten with Finn Bálor whispering in his ear. He pushed away Rey Mysterio and left himself to get beat down alone. In fact, he has pushed everyone away and no longer tags with Dolph Ziggler, either.

It sure looks like the creative team could be setting the stage for Styles to find a new group in The Judgment Day. The stable does not need him, but it could benefit from his inclusion.

If The Phenomenal One did cost Edge the match at Extreme Rules, he could become the final piece that takes the faction all the way to the top of WWE.

Face: Max Dupri (LA Knight)

3 of 4

Max Dupri may never compete in a WWE ring again, but the wrestler behind the character looks to be a crucial player on SmackDown going forward under his old NXT name: LA Knight.

He has cut ties with Maximum Male Models, freeing him up to run solo or find new allies. While there is no clear spot for him at Extreme Rules, he could make a splash simply by revealing himself to be Knight.

It would certainly get more people talking as he was a popular star in NXT. His charisma is obvious and echoes top WWE stars such as The Rock and The Miz. There is no doubt the company can do something special with him for the next five years if booked right.

WWE continues to struggle for big names as heels and faces. Knight is ready-made to take on a similar role to The A-Lister for SmackDown, playing the charismatic personality off top names. He will first need to deal with his former associates, though.

Heel: Alexa Bliss

4 of 4

Alexa Bliss has always been a better heel than a babyface. Her best runs have all been in that role, especially as The Goddess. Recently, she has been featured regularly but lacks much of what made her a top star.

She has no discernible character beyond being a loyal friend. Even glimpses of a more violent side in recent weeks have not changed her, but these could be the setup for a plan to completely change her character.

Damage CTRL could use a fourth member, especially with Survivor Series WarGames approaching on November 26, and Bliss could fit the profile if she decides it is better to join the group rather than fight them. She can help Bayley defeat Bianca Belair when Dakota Kai and Iyo Sky are taken out.

There is another interesting setup. Recent QR codes have hinted at the return of Bray Wyatt whose history with Bliss has never been settled. If he did make his return at the end of Extreme Rules, it would likely be to confront her.

This sets the stage for an interesting return to a gimmick that only worked with The Fiend around. And Bliss would be able to stand on her own, separate from the other stories in the women's division.

Either way, she needs a fresh start, and her path is clear thanks to how much WWE has relied on her recently.
