Fan Injured in Panthers, Patriots Practice Fight Involving Christian McCaffrey

Adam WellsAug 17, 2022

A fan attending a joint practice between the Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots on Wednesday got more than she bargained for when a fight broke out between the two teams.

Per ESPN's David Newton and Mike Reiss, Patriots defensive lineman Deatrich Wise Jr. landed on a female fan on the sidelines after McCaffrey was knocked out of bounds on a running play.

McCaffrey got to his feet and spiked the ball at Wise's feet, leading to members of both teams getting into a physical altercation that moved near the stands where fans were seated.

According to the report, the woman had a swollen foot but refused treatment from New England's medical staff. She was offered tickets to a Patriots home game this season, received an apology from Wise and a handshake from McCaffrey.

Fights tend to be common during the preseason, even among players on the same team. Tensions can run higher when there are two clubs on the field at this time of year.

This marked the second successive day Patriots and Panthers players got into it during practice. Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald noted Patriots wide receivers Kristian Wilkerson and Kendrick Bourne, along with a Panthers safety Kenny Robinson, were kicked out for their role in a fight on Tuesday.

According to Reiss, referee Brad Allen tossed Patriots center James Ferentz and Panthers defensive tackle Phil Hoskins yesterday because of a separate altercation.

"We came here not to fight, but to practice," Panthers head coach Matt Rhule told reporters after Tuesday's session.

There is no indication that any of the players involved in these fights have sustained injuries.

The two teams are holding joint practices at the Patriots' practice facilities outside of Gillette Stadium. They are scheduled to play a preseason game at New England's home stadium on Friday at 7 p.m. ET.
