British F1 Grand Prix 2022: Odds, Preview and Top Storylines

Joe TanseyJul 2, 2022

The Formula One battle between Ferrari and Red Bull took a new spin during qualifying for the British Grand Prix.

Ferrari's Carlos Sainz earned his first-ever pole, beating out Red Bull's Max Verstappen for the first spot on the starting grid at Silverstone.

Sainz and his teammate, Charles Leclerc, have now picked up seven of the 10 poles in 2022, but competing on race day has been a bit of a problem.

Verstappen and Red Bull have pulled away in the drivers' and constructors' championships over the last month due to success from Verstappen and Sergio Perez and plenty of errors out of the Ferrari garage.

Leclerc and Sainz both finished inside the top five in two of the last three races, and some adjustments made in Canada two weeks ago could help them better compete with the Red Bull drivers.

Both of the top teams in 2022 have to look over their shoulders at Mercedes, too. Lewis Hamilton and George Russell qualified in fifth and eighth, respectively, and both drivers are coming off a top-five finish.

Mercedes may not win any overall championships this year, but it can put itself in the mix for race wins if its form continues to improve.

Can Ferrari End Red Bull's Winning Streak?

Red Bull comes into Silverstone on a six-race winning streak.

Max Verstappen has five of those victories, and Sergio Perez took the Monaco Grand Prix.

While Red Bull has been busy winning, Ferrari experienced some troubles with its power units and suffered some unpleasant results. The Scuderia replaced Leclerc's power unit before the Canadian Grand Prix, and he ended up fifth despite starting in the back. Sainz took second behind Verstappen.

Sainz captured the pole position on Saturday in rainy conditions with a lap uner one minute and 41 seconds.

Verstappen and Perez should have more pace on Sunday during an event that should take place in much drier conditions, according to BBC Weather. Verstappen will try to go off fast in order to take an early advantage over his Ferrari foe.

Ferrari desperately needs two strong results from its drivers and ideally a victory to make up ground in the drivers' and constructors' championships. Perez moved into second with 129 points behind Verstappen's 175 during Ferrari's struggles. Leclerc sits third with 126.

Ferrari would love to have Sainz hold the lead off the start and for Leclerc to push for second ahead of Verstappen.

What Impact Will Mercedes Have on Leaders?

Mercedes appears poised to play some sort of role at the front of the grid for the rest of the season.

Lewis Hamilton produced his first podium finish of the season at Canada, and George Russell has been the most consistent driver on the grid with nine top-five finishes.

Hamilton qualified better than Russell on Saturday. He took fifth place, while his teammate landed in eighth.

If the two Mercedes cars have the same pace as Canada, they should contend for a podium spot again, and if the circumstances play in their favor, maybe a win could be possible in the home Grand Prix for the two British drivers.

Mercedes may be too far back to win the season-long championships, but it could be competitive enough to pick up victories or take away spots on the grid from Ferrari and Red Bull.

Mercedes needs to back up its strong weekend in Canada with results at Silverstone, and if that is the case, we should see more than two teams pick up wins in 2022.
