Baker Mayfield Trade Rumors: Seahawks' Interest Described as 'Lukewarm at Best'

Adam WellsApr 30, 2022

The number of teams that might have interest in Baker Mayfield appears to be getting smaller as the offseason continues.

Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport (h/t NFL.com's Gregg Rosenthal), the Seattle Seahawks have been "lukewarm at best" on adding Mayfield because they don't like how he would fit in their system.

There has been a lot of speculation about Mayfield since the draft began, but he is still a member of the Cleveland Browns.

Per ESPN's David Newton, the Carolina Panthers "hadn't totally ruled out" acquiring Mayfield during the draft if the Browns agreed to "pay a large portion" of his $18.9 million salary in 2022.

No deal materialized Friday, leading to the Panthers making a trade with the New England Patriots to acquire the No. 94 overall pick in the third round to select Mississippi quarterback Matt Corral.

Based on how the draft has played out, the list of teams desperate for a quarterback appears to be very small. The Pittsburgh Steelers were the only team to take a signal-caller in the first two rounds (Kenny Pickett at No. 20 overall).

This would seem to be bad news for Mayfield and Jimmy Garoppolo, the top two trade options available. They also have to prove they are healthy after both players underwent offseason shoulder surgery.

There are certainly teams that could use an upgrade at quarterback, including the Seahawks. But they are rebuilding and may not want to invest in a player like Mayfield with one year remaining on his contract.

The Browns would almost certainly like to find a trade partner for Mayfield. He originally requested a trade from the team on March 17 before they acquired Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans.

Mayfield, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 draft, has spent the first four seasons of his career in Cleveland. He led the franchise to an 11-5 record and its first playoff victory since January 1995 during the 2020 season.

Injuries and inconsistent play sank Mayfield and the Browns in 2021. He threw for a career-low 3,010 yards and 17 touchdowns in 14 starts.
