UFC 141 Lesnar vs. Overeem: Dana White's Octagon Can't Control These Beasts

Brian MaziqueDec 29, 2011

It is almost impossible to conceive that Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem's heavyweight clash will end in a decision. Both of these men are among the sports biggest and most powerful.

Lesnar has seen only one fight in his seven fight MMA career go the distance. That was a decision win over Heath Herring in 2008. Overeem has had only five of his 46 MMA bouts end in decision.

They are not showing up to be technicians, although both are extremely skilled on the ground. They are showing up to trade bombs.

Lesnar's injuries and personal issues weigh heavy in this fight. I question his motivation for the bout. It is understandable if he were otherwise occupied with physical and legal issues still hovering.

Also, Lesnar wanted Cain Velasquez, the man who defeated him. But Velasquez was KO'd by Junior dos Santos at HFC Fox 1. Lesnar must now prepare for a different challenge, if he defeats Overeem.

Overeem is a devastating striker, who has come over from Strikeforce to stake claim to the UFC crown. Most recently, he avoided the wily and non-confrontational Fabricio Werdum to score a boring decision victory in the Strikeforce Heavyweight tournament.

Overeem doesn't have the natural bulk to contend with Lesnar on the ground, but he is skilled enough to avoid the take-down attempts. If it becomes a striking contest, which most heavyweight bouts do, Overeem has the advantage in quickness.

In a bold prediction I believe Overeem KO's Lesnar, in what should be Brock's final MMA bout. At this stage of his life, he seems better suited for a return to the WWE. I believe the physical ailments have taken a toll on Lesnar mentally.

He is not the same beast he was prior to the diverticulitis illness in 2009, that reoccurred earlier this year. Overeem is younger, yet more experienced and ready to challenge Junior Dos Santos for the crown.

For now, Dana White will collect as two of the UFC's biggest, baddest and most recognizable do battle.
