Jimmy Garoppolo Says He Might Ask Aaron Rodgers for Advice on Uncertain 49ers Future
Facing an uncertain future with the San Francisco 49ers, Jimmy Garoppolo could seek advice from the reigning NFL MVP about how to handle an awkward situation.
Appearing on The Rich Eisen Show (h/t Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area), Garoppolo said "there's a good possibility" he speaks with Aaron Rodgers at some point about things.
"I know Aaron pretty well," he added. "We've talked a couple of times on the field, off the field. Whatever little piece of advice he could give to me ... obviously, it's worked out pretty well for him."
The quarterback rooms for the 2020 Green Bay Packers and 2021 49ers bear a strong resemblance to each other.
Last year, the Packers decided to start planning for a post-Rodgers future by trading up to select Jordan Love with the No. 26 overall pick in the draft.
Rodgers responded by turning in arguably the best season of his career in 2020. He led the NFL in completion percentage (70.7) and touchdown passes (48) while throwing for 4,299 yards and winning his third MVP award.
Things took a turn during the offseason, with Rodgers reportedly so unhappy with Packers management that he wanted to be traded or considered retirement.
Per Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports, Rodgers was "willing to weigh hardline options" ranging from "refusing to show up for offseason activities to holding out of training camp and possibly retirement" if the Packers didn't fire general manager Brian Gutekunst.
None of those things came to pass, as the two sides agreed to rework Rodgers' contract that voided the final year of his deal in 2023.
The 49ers decided to make one of the biggest moves of the offseason by trading up nine spots to secure the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL draft. They used it to select North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance.
Despite the addition of Lance, the 49ers didn't move on from Garoppolo. Head coach Kyle Shanahan was insistent the 29-year-old was going to be their starter this season.
Through the first two games, Garoppolo has been San Francisco's quarterback. Lance did play four snaps in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions, throwing a touchdown pass on his first attempt.
The Niners are off to a 2-0 start with Garoppolo leading the offense. He will get a chance to speak with Rodgers in person this week, with the Packers scheduled to play at Levi's Stadium on Sunday at 8:20 p.m. ET.
