Kerryon Johnson Agrees to Contract with 49ers After Raheem Mostert's Knee Injury

Joseph ZuckerSep 14, 2021

Free-agent running back Kerryon Johnson is signing with the San Francisco 49ers.

His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, confirmed to ESPN's Adam Schefter the 24-year-old will join San Francisco's practice squad.

The move comes after 49ers running back Raheem Mostert announced he's out for the remainder of the 2021 NFL season:

Mostert's knee injury didn't effect the Niners much in their 41-33 victory over the Detroit Lions. Elijah Mitchell led the team with 104 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries.

Mitchell seemingly played his way into the starting role for Week 2 against the Philadelphia Eagles. Third-round draft pick Trey Sermon is waiting in the wings as well after he was a healthy scratch for the opener.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan has consistently elevated the running backs on his roster, so fans will remain confident about the direction of the backfield despite Mostert's season-ending injury.

The addition of Johnson strengthens the team's depth at running back and provides him with a chance at getting his career back on track following a three-year run with the Lions that yielded diminishing returns.

Johnson ran for 641 yards and averaged 5.4 yards per carry in 10 games as a rookie in 2018. Over the next two years, he had 584 yards and five rushing touchdowns while averaging nearly two fewer yards (3.5) per touch.

The 2018 second-round pick was claimed off waivers by the Philadelphia Eagles in May but was released after picking up a knee injury.

While he may only be on the practice squad for now, it's difficult to imagine a better landing spot for Johnson right now than San Francisco.
