Cam Newton Rumors: 'Doubts' in Patriots That QB Will Be Able to Throw Like He Used To
August 2, 2021
Coming off the worst passing season of his career, Cam Newton is reportedly facing "doubts" within the New England Patriots organization about his ability to return to MVP-caliber play.
Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reported some in New England share the sentiment from scouts that Newton's best passing days are behind him.
Newton threw for only 2,657 yards and a career-low eight touchdowns against 10 interceptions last season. While he was effective on the ground, Newton consistently struggled to find his rhythm with passes down the field and instead relied heavily on checkdowns.
The Patriots' lack of skill-position talent did little to help Newton, but he did not appear comfortable with his surgically repaired shoulder, and his passes lacked timing. New England spent its first-round pick on quarterback Mac Jones, so Newton's time as a starter could be closing fast.
Jones is firmly entrenched as the backup heading into camp, but the Patriots are invested in him over the long term. If Newton can't find his rhythm this season after the Patriots made several moves this offseason to improve their offense, he'll eventually find himself watching from the sidelines.
