Columbia, South Carolina Deserves a Bowl Game
Despite the plethora of college football bowl games in existence today, there is a great city in the south that is often overlooked as a great location.
This town has a great football stadium that can fit 80,000+ fans, many hotels available for fans, and even state fairgrounds right outside that work well for parking and tailgating. This overlooked city is Columbia, SC.
Today we have bowl games in Boise, Idaho, and Washington, D.C., cities that provide the risk of snowfall and at the very least cold weather. I can guarantee Columbia has much warmer weather than either of these locations.
Additionally, many cities like Orlando get more than one bowl game which doesn't seem quite fair to me. Why not give Columbia a chance. It couldn't hurt the local economy.
Williams-Brice Stadium has rich tradition that could be furthered by an additional football game each year. There are many parking/tailgating areas available within short walking distance and within short driving distance of the city's hotels.
Additionally, there are many sports bars in the city that serve as great locations to check out some of the other great games on during the bowl season.
Columbia would be a great location for an ACC or SEC East tie in, as many teams in these conference would not have to travel very far. I am sure ACC fans would much rather travel to Columbia to see their team play than Boise, Idaho.
Additionally, it would serve as a great location for Big 10 fans who would like to go to a warmer climate for a vacation.
Attempts at bringing a bowl game have failed in the past, but I hope Columbia considers petitioning for a bowl game again, and I hope possible sponsors realize what a prime location this would be for a bowl game.
