Tyler's Bio

I am a Journalism major at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.

I spent my younger days in Central PA wondering why I'd been placed in the center of sports hell, or as it's referred to in the sports world as "Happy Valley." I often wondered if it was a horrible mistake, or if I'd died in a past life and this was my punishment for all time. **Note: I do not hate all PSU fans, but given the general fan-base is 45 and older with less than a high school education where I live, I have my reservations.**

After a soirée in the political arena, I found out that it was not my true calling. I love to write and sports always was my thing, so I put two and two together.

I currently write as a correspondent for the Johnstown Tribune-Democrat. I cover area football and basketball games, as well as soccer and volleyball matches. I recently covered a gymnastics competition which was, well...thrilling. I also cover Pitt football for PantherDigest.com, part of Scout.com.

I am the sports editor for The Advocate, the student newspaper at UPJ.

Aside from writing, I enjoying having healthy discussions/debates with people about the world of sports. Not to burn myself out on one thing, I enjoy listening to music (mostly classic rock), reading, wiki-hopping, and playing a mean guitar hero.

My goal is to one day be on the football beat of a D-I university, hopefully Pitt because bright days area ahead, but I'll take anything that comes my way.

I follow the following teams:

Pittsburgh Panthers
Pittsburgh Steelers

Tyler Writes About

The Short List facts and information about Tyler Long

Favorite Athletes

"Shady" McCoy, Tony Dorsett, Dan Marino, Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Strahan, Peyton Manning, Marshawn Lynch

Favorite Sports Teams

Pitt Panthers, Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Penguins

All Time Sports Moment

No way could I ever pick just one, and my list is way too long to post on here.

Most Memorable Game Attended

Notre Dame vs. Pitt in the last game at Pitt Stadium A close second, Penn St vs. Pitt at Three Rivers, the last season for the stadium and the series.

Most Unbreakable Sports Record

Batting over .400 for a season, Ted Williams did it last and it won't be done again.

Ruth or Mays?

Mays, because he was an actual athlete. Ruth is the most recognized name when it comes to the sport, but he basically drank and ate his way to 714.

Unitas or Montana?

Who did more for the game? Unitas Who would I rather have with the game on the line? Montana

Jordan or Gretzky?

No contest, Jordan. Gretzky was a great hockey player, maybe the best ever but MJ was and still is the man. His ability on the court aside, there aren't many sports figures that are more high profile. Jordan made basketball in the 90's, people watched games just to see him play.

Pac 10, Big 12, Big 10, SEC, ACC, or Big East?

The Big East. Getting back to their winning ways in football the hard way, with programs that are up and coming. Up and down the toughest basketball conference in the nation, Pac 10 and ACC are good but pound for pound the Big East is the school of hard knocks in college basketball.

  1. Ugh, too many nut cases around here. Especially the ones who leave ridiculous comments but don't contribute as far as writing an article. I had to blow that up.

Thanks for the add, keep on writing.

  2. Hey Tyler,

I hope you've been enjoying the new and improved Bleacher Report—we're really happy with the feedback we've received so far.

Just thought I'd let you know that next week we'll be launching the site to the world with some public announcements, and thus it'd be great to get a contribution from you between now and Tuesday to make Bleacher Report's launch a success.

Let me know if you need any help with ideas or have questions. Have a great weekend Tyler!

  3. Yeah to be honest I thought McCoy looked better than Moreno. Moreno has elusiveness and speed but I haven't seen him knock someone down like McCoy.

Thanks for the support on the top 25. I tend to get hammered a lot on this site for what I write. Especially if I write about Ohio State.

  4. No problem man...and actually, in my mind, most of Pitt's team could be considered for this list because of that amazing upset...maybe even Wannstedt as the All-Underdog Team's coach.

I chose Auburn's D-Line basically because in their game they faced a healthy Tebow and Harvin on the road. Pitt faced WVU at home, where White got injured. Plus, for some reason Coach Rod decided to give the ball to Slaton only ten times the whole game (9 rushing).

But that takes nothing away from Pitt's D-Line, you are certainly correct about that—they clearly stepped their game up for WVU. Thanks for reading, and definently no bashing was inferred...that's what this site is for...sports talk and healthy debating. Hope you enjoyed.
