Joseph's Bio
I'm just a mild mannered person who really appreciates sports. I'm also pretty opinionated, I just don't speak too much about it. Typically, when someone states an opinion, there's a hundred people waiting to attack. I'd rather bring unity, so I try to avoid speaking my mind too much.
Think about it, though: When did it become necessary to embarrass opponents, not just defeat them? When did it become all about the money, not about the game? Furthermore, when did sports become so important to our nation that we worship athletes? Do they really deserve all those millions of dollars when they could be used towards education or helping impoverished countries?
There are a lot of things wrong with athletics, and I would love nothing more than to see a few of them corrected. But that's neither here nor there.
On another note, I'm a pretty agreeable, laid back dude. I love hanging out with people, and when I'm not watching sports, I tend to love anything music related.
I hail from Central Mississippi, and there's hardly anything I love more than good ol' Southern culture. I also try to stay involved in making Jackson, MS a better place to live. You should visit sometime!
Hit me up by commenting on any of my articles, and I'll gladly reply. I love hearing other people's views, so please comment. If you just needlessly attack me, though, it sort of defeats the purpose, doesn't it? Feel free to give me constructive criticism.

The Short List What Joseph thinks about sport's most pressing questions
-
Favorite Athletes
Pistol Pete, George Gervin, Dr. J, Walter Peyton, Jerry Rice, Brett Favre, and I especially love anyone who pops out of my home state of Mississippi (i.e. Jerious Norwood)
-
Favorite Sports Teams
The Mississippi State Bulldogs and the New Orleans Saints, while the Cleveland Cavliers are my guilty pleasure. Don't tell anybody, but sometimes I really root for Southern Miss pretty hard.
-
All Time Sports Moment
1996 NCAA Tournament, when Mississippi State, led by Darryl Wilson, shut down Ray Allen and beat UConn. They ended up going to the Final Four that year.
-
Most Memorable Game Attended
I've been to a number of big State football upsets and huge plays, many of which will never be known by the public. Anybody recall what we State fans know as the Immaculate Interception?
-
Most Unbreakable Sports Record
Pistol Pete's scoring record, methinks. Non sports record? The insurmountable amount of awkward conversations I create.
-
Ruth or Mays?
Neither are coming back from the dead anytime soon.
-
Unitas or Montana?
Marino!....I mean, Montana. Whoops.
-
Pele or Maradona?
Pele. I honestly don't recognize the other guy.

Pac 10, Big 12, Big 10, SEC, ACC, or Big East?
SEC. Duh.

This is different for me because normally prefer opinion or humor/satire, but I was asked to take a look at it, so I did.
I'd appreciate any feedback on the analysis side you may have for future such articles.
Be forewarned....its a longer piece, so grab some coffee.

Hey Joseph,
Need some State football insight into the 2009 team. Shoot me an email at jhoke2@bellsouth.net, just wanted to ask you a few questions. I am the Auburn community leader as well.
Thanks.

Joseph-
I think Bower would be excited not only to get back into coaching but to stay in MS and move up the the SEC would be a great career opportunity for him. From what I understand he still lives in Hattiesburg and is living off of his severance package. I also think about the element of having Bower at State making it more possible for a MSU-USM game. If that happened, then Ole Myth would finally have to man up and play the buzzards too. I think Bower would love a chance to lead State to a win over USM.
Hopefully State will be on Tubby's trail if they aren't already - no offense, but the program has nothing to lose. As an LSU fan I wouldn't want to see it but as a CFB/ SEC fan it's a great fit IMHO.
As for the LSU D, the co-coordinator strategy was indeed a blunder by Miles. I think it was the wrong system as well as the wrong guys running it. LSU had become known as Defensive U because of aggressive, man to man formations, complex blitz packages, and defensive speed.
This year, while some of the DB's were young and inexperienced, LSU still had the personnel to be strong. But the formations and lack of calls for pressure on the QB put the onus all on the shoulders of the secondary, who summarily got scorched by the better QB's they faced.
Example: You can't put single coverage on Percy Harvin and expect that your first year starter safety will be fast enough to catch him if he gets loose. If I know this, how come the guys getting paid $400k a year don't know it? It's been very frustrating.
Now, LSU came close to winning 2 games (Bama and Ark) and if so they would be 9-3 instead of 7-5. Even with the defensive problems 9-3 wouldn't have been a bad season considering. But given that they struggled so much on D tells me that not only a new staff but a new philosophy has to be introduced. So far it looks like it's heading in that direction but Miles is such a politician that you can never tell what he's really gonna do. Anyway, you asked for my 2 cents and that's about it.
Good luck with the new staff - you should blog about the Tubby-Bower team! Get something going!

Joseph-
What do you think of this? Tubberville as HC in Starkvegas with Jeff Bower as OC. I don't think you will find two guys more connected with Mississippi recruitng...just a thought.
