Actually, I split the sentence because I thought it would make your point clearer. I also used to be advised against the use of But in the beginning. Although, it comfortably serves a rather direct aproach to make your point.
Anyway, in case you are uncomfortable with it, you can always change it with either of the adverbs: nevertheless, moreover, still, anyhow, on the contrary, and so on. Otherwise, I understand why you avoid using it.
