To Tom G:
I'll take your word for it that "most spreads don't run as often or as effectively as Mizzou", but I must point out that Mizzou's offensive production was attained at the expense of Big12 defenses. So your emphasis of recruiting SEC quality athletes is pertinent, but it neglects one important factor - one that most other people outside the SEC (Texas A&M included) seem to forget. You must also place as much or more emphasis on defense (athletes AND coaching staff) as you have on offense. Otherwise, it doesn't matter how good your offense is because your offense will not be on the field enough to win the game.
Look at it this way. If you only get the ball six or seven times a game, it doesn't matter if you can score on 75% of your possessions (not likely anyway). That's only 35 points a game, maybe, and that's not enough. Too many teams count on having 10 or 11 possessions a game, and that isn't going to happen when the other team can grind out 15 play drives and chew up 45 minutes TOP.
As for forcing the league to adjust to Mizzzou's offense, I think Urban Meyer and Gus Malzahn brought enough spread to the SEC that the change has and is already taking place. I guess a good indicator will be how well Alabama can contain Michigan when they meet on September 1st. And by that I don't mean who wins. Even if Alabama wins (a big IF considering the inexperience they have on defense, especially the secondary), pay attention to how many third down conversions Michigan is able to make, their TOP, rushing yards, and number of big plays (25 yds or more) and then compare that to Mizzou. I don't know, but I suspect those numbers were pretty good for y'all last year. That should give you a good indication of what to expect in the coming season.
Well, welcome to the SEC. It's nice to have you aboard.
