Vedant has yet to fill out a bio.
Hey! I own this page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Fans-of-Real-Madrid/489574697787244
Would you consider becoming an admin? I've read some of your comment and I really liked them. I think you would really help us gain publicity, with your amazing work. Just write Bleacherreport, on the wall and I will contact you.
Yeah, even Bento isn't dumb enough to start an unfit Nani over Vierinha (I hope).
I've actually been a huge fan of Vieirinha since his days in Greece and I agree that he could be the key player against Russia. Nani may be a little better technically, but he is still guilty of dwelling on the ball far too long and opting to shoot instead of making a simple, yet incisive pass. Vieirinha isn't as flashy, but he's far more direct and consistent. You can count on him to work hard off the ball (brilliant work rate for Wolfsburg) and consistently beat his man and whip in quality crosses to Ronaldo. He is also quite comfortable cutting in and shooting with his left.
I've been screaming for Danny to start as a #10 in a 4-2-3-1 since 2008, but I doubt it'll ever happen, especially with Bento. He's an excellent player, but will soon be turning 30. He could have done great things over the past four or five years, but his talent - in his prime - was wasted by both Queiroz and Bento. Therefore, in order to focus on the future, I would rather see Pizzi or Josue utilized as the #10 rather than Danny. I fear that Danny's time will quickly come to an end, but it's a shame considering what he could have done for us..
Pizzi, however, has been outstanding for Depor, and is extremely comfortable playing on both wings, as a #10, and even as a false 9 which he did quite often at Pacos. His quickness, technique, creativity, and versatility more than warrants a spot on every one of Bento's Portugal squads.
Josue is another quality #10 who has been criminally ignored by Bento. Hopefully he'll finally get the shot he deserves now that he's playing at Porto.
Bruno Gama was fantastic in the final weeks of the season, but there's just too much competition on the wings at the moment: Ronaldo, Nani, Danny(out of position), Vieirinha, Pizzi, and Varela are all competing for around four spots on the squad. Nevertheless, he has done more than enough to be given a chance in a friendly.
Nelson Oliveira has done absolutely nothing to warrant a call-up. I once had high hopes for the kid, but I must admit that I did fall for a bit of the hype surrounding him. I think all the hype got to his head, and he's been really poor whenever I've watched him. Again, Bento continues to completely ignore quality players on "smaller" Portuguese clubs regardless of how well they are doing. Porto's new signing, Lica, had a terrific season as a quick, mobile false 9 for Estoril, but didn't even get a call up.
Tiago Rodrigues, Balde, Steven Vitoria, Andre Leao, and Tiago Valente have all had superb seasons for their respective clubs. They have done far more than the likes of Ruben Amorim, Nelson Oliveira, Ruben Micael, etc but are disregarded because they don't play in a "big" team. It's a shame.
Andre Martins has actually done quite well at Sporting, and his inclusion does make sense since he's the type of player who fits Bento's system. He's actually quite similar to Joao Moutinho in that he's kind of a mobile, energetic deep-lying playmaker rather than a true #10. He doesn't quite have Moutinho's tenacity or passing range, but he is more mobile, especially in the final third. He would be a much, much better option than Meireles, but I doubt Bento's going to make that gamble.
I am really looking forward to watching Portugal's U-20 team this summer. This is arguably the best generation we've had since the "golden generation" and there's quite a few youngsters who could definitely break into the senior team in the next few years.
Portugal will be playing Croatia, and it would have been the perfect opportunity for Bento to experiment with a few uncapped players, but who does he call-up? Hugo Almeida, Nelson Oliveira, Ruben Amorim, etc..
We'll see Andre Martins if we're lucky.
I would like to know who you think should start on the right wing against Russia this Friday?
Nani, when fit, is always Bento's first choice. But I think he may opt for Vieirinha since he's been doing well in Germany and had a man-of-the-match performance against Azerbaijan.
I would personally go for Vieirinha simply because Nani hasn't played much lately, and since I feel the United winger could be a useful impact sub of the bench.
Hi there, Vedant! Long time, no talk. I hope all is well. Just wanted to let you know that I have an end of season review up: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1650308-lionel-messi-real-madrid-and-la-liga-end-of-season-awards
Just wanted to make a rare appearance on BR. Hope you'll check it out, amigo. :-)
It seems like you are a Madridista like me. Do you want to talk Champions League?
Personally I'd rather see Bayern vs Barca in the FINAL. and a Dortmund Madrid rematch. Cheers.
Thanks Vedant. Appreciate the kind words. I wouldn't consider him one of my favorite athletes, but at the end of the day, you can't not recognize his brilliance and achievements when they're there in front of you. Try to be objective, and I'm glad you see it that way. Thanks for the read and support. Means a lot!
Well, you can formulate any conclusions that you like, but they would still be based on a very small sample size. Every game is different. La Liga is a very unfair league, but it's not and will never be sh!t, unless Barcelona and Real Madrid also fall into the same situation as Valencia, Malaga, etc. It's like some people, you included, assuming Barcelona is playing at its full potential when they get dominated by a Madrid B lineup. Barcelona has been struggling against tough, physical teams in Champions League games for years. Those teams would all avoid getting into an open game, bunk up, and exploit Barcelona's physical weaknesses. Even then, Barcelona would still have a say in the matter if their passing game was right. Take Chelsea last year, for instance. Barcelona were in control of their destiny in both legs and let it slip away. What has transpired against Milan and Real Madrid is different.
Ronaldo comes in for the last 30 minutes and still has more attempts on goal than Messi. You think this is vintage Barca at its peak? Please.
Yeah, you still think this is the best Barcelona has to offer? Two freaking shots on goal against a Madrid B team that didn't really play too defensively? Please. It's a good thing Barcelona still has 13 points to burn because this is pathetic.
