Jennifer's Bio

I'm a grad student at one of the best hockey schools in the country, UND (former home of Ed Belfour, Mike Commodore and Jonathan Toews, among others). I'm stuck in that special hell known as grad school (but at least I'm done teaching Freshman Comp). Even when I'm neck deep in homework and research I'm an obsessive hockey fan (and obsessive seems to be the key word here).

July and August are the two longest months of the year, and if it wasn't for hockey to keep me going, I'd have to say December and January would be the two absolutely worst months. It hovers around -12 and we get about 4 hours of daylight. There's a reason people from the north look pale and slightly unhinged at the end of winter.

When hockey isn't on tv or the radio, I'm either reading or knitting. Much like a squirrel, I'm always collecting books, yarn and shoes, except obviously squirrels collect nuts and I'm turning into one (a nut, that is). Hmmm...

I like to write, and hockey history is usually my focus. Any era, any event, and odds are I know it. This is the reason why I'm not good at math. Yup, that's exactly it.

I'm a little insane from the papers, the cold, and the research, but I won't mind if you don't.

  1. Hi Jenn,

I have been on-line, I just have not written anything in a while. My day's off are my writing day's and I have been busy...nice weather..outdoors..golf..you know:)

Great Barilko read! (by the way!)
    Mark

  2. Jen, love, hope ye are faring well. Oh, sorry, just got done with a Ren Faire weekend at the Castle. Haven't heard from you in a while. When I get time, I will read your latest (looks bloody interesting...oh, sorry again). Have a great week.

  3. By the way, thanks for the edits on the Rangers piece. Every so often I'll struggle to make an idea work, or just get the thoughts out there in a...logical order. Thanks so much for cleaning it up Jen!

  4. Don't worry about my last articles that have been posted.... I was playing with the blog feature and I found out that they post as an article. I didn't mean for that to happen. Sorry!

  5. Hi Jennifer,

I just wanted to tell you that I find your articles amazing. It is great to be able to get through those amazing hockey histories, thanks to you.

Keep up with the amazing work,

    Miah :)

  6. Yea, I'm with you on that. I'm still watching (8-2 now) but only because I think I'm enjoying this a little.

I've been trying to blog the game and figure out how it works on b/r, but I'm giving up on that too. There is just too much to write on this! I've called just about everything that has happened this series... I should have gone into journalism or broadcasting and worked NHL games... I just see the game and understand it well.

  7. That's cool! I've vowed to myself to get at least 100 signatures on the petition. I think that it is a realistic goal for me.

What do you think of this Wings-Avs game? Geez...

  8. Thanks! It means a lot to me now. I think it is wrong what has happened.

  9. Hello My Northern Friend! How we doing? Pretty cool how the Wings are taking out the Avs. I'm a little about the Wings away games but all they need is one in Colorado and they're off to Round 3. Have a GREAT day and a BETTER week.

    GO WINGS!!!

  10. Glad you liked it haha. You were one of the first two pieces I worked on, so hopefully it worked out. I'm thinking that I'll keep the editors tag, and just work to help out around the NHL Community, and if stuff gets backlogged and you want someone to look at it, drop me a line (pass that around too eh? I'm working to make the NHL Community as accommodating as possible, and I figure that if anyone in the section can come to me with anything—especially editing concerns now—it makes things in the NHL strand a lot easier, as well as frees up some space in other places!). That's not to say I won't periodically roam about however, but I figured this makes things a lot more convenient around here!

Ps. Feel free to edit my work whenever you want. The only "consistent" editor I have, but that's strictly for 'Beyond the Bleachers' stuff, so anything on any piece of mine that you want to tinker with, feel free :)

  11. Jen,

Thanks for the head's up on the editing lag. Like I said, we're constantly working to maximize efficiency...but obviously we still have a ways to go. There will be editors working throughout the day--and hopefully everything gets taken care of. Keep me posted either way, and thanks again for bearing with us.

    Ryan

  12. So long Wild -- Good Luck Habs...Bruins are on a roll!

  13. By the way, I was planning on doing a piece from your usual realm, about Hall et al. and the 1919 non-event. What do you think, and would I be stepping on your toes at all? Let me know, and take care.

    M

  14. Hey there. How's it been going?

I am just about to check out the articles you've posted for the playoffs. I was going to do a lot more writing myself, but I've been ill and busy. I don't have to tell you about that! I figure I will recap the Flames/Sharks series later on, and for now will trod along with dribs and drabs. I am looking forward to your newest lineup!

I've been loving the Avs/Wild series... except the last one of course!

Take care and good luck with the papers.

  15. Jen,

You're probably right about the backlog of playoff coverage--there's been a flood in the last few days. That said, we're constantly working to maximize the efficiency of the editing system...so please do continue to be in touch on issues like these in the future. If anything seems off--or if you have any suggestions for improvements--I'd love to hear about it.

    Ryan
