I'm a grad student at one of the best hockey schools in the country, UND (former home of Ed Belfour, Mike Commodore and Jonathan Toews, among others). I'm stuck in that special hell known as grad school (but at least I'm done teaching Freshman Comp). Even when I'm neck deep in homework and research I'm an obsessive hockey fan (and obsessive seems to be the key word here).

July and August are the two longest months of the year, and if it wasn't for hockey to keep me going, I'd have to say December and January would be the two absolutely worst months. It hovers around -12 and we get about 4 hours of daylight. There's a reason people from the north look pale and slightly unhinged at the end of winter.

When hockey isn't on tv or the radio, I'm either reading or knitting. Much like a squirrel, I'm always collecting books, yarn and shoes, except obviously squirrels collect nuts and I'm turning into one (a nut, that is). Hmmm...

I like to write, and hockey history is usually my focus. Any era, any event, and odds are I know it. This is the reason why I'm not good at math. Yup, that's exactly it.

I'm a little insane from the papers, the cold, and the research, but I won't mind if you don't.

Tonight's game must be adding to your stress. I'm not even that bothered, and it's giving me a migraine!

Yes, I very much want to do more. I had an idea or two last night for a collaberation... of course I forgot most of it. I should always write things down! Anyway, they'll come back to me. It can be a good way to show the contrasts in view, yet show the wider public that really, fans from all over often have the same wants, no matter where there are from.

I am planning to do another article in August (before I leave for Orlando) about the 10th season of Beat Mike and encourage people to join my network to play my pro pick'em game. I am just curious though, do they have this type of a web site for people to write news articles because I think I have a feel that I would like to write about at some point. Thanks for your help with the article. I am hoping for the best and that the Commissioner will contact me. I felt very upset with it and I wanted the fans to know about it. He was a nice guy to all of those fans that were able to get an autograph and pictures with them. Then, Goodell had to move on. I was going to be like the next person or so to get an autograph and picture from him. What's strange about that article I wrote was that I wrote it as a third person, though it was about me. It's clever that I could be the writer and the one that was written about in one article like that.

Tell that son of yours I'm jealous! I hate the Rangers but i love Shanny...hes a real legend. As far as my first act of poor judgement as a CL...it probably started with this choice of a pic...lol...oh well...I don't like people who bad mouth southern hockey. We play just fine...Oh well..Zander can't complain about my passion. Time to change this pic though..im getting tired of looking at my own boobs in black and gold...Orange and Black is much more my colors.

Yep, turns out ill be eating crow probably...because of Bryan Thiel quoting me in his latest article. I think hockey's only "scandal" is the idiocy of making goalie equipment smaller...its a crime! Oh and ignore jerks who don't appreciate your editing...All i ask is that my editors know hockey, and most of the time when they don't seems to they don't touch much so its all good.

As far as the "tampering" idea goes i dont know. I think its pointless since Burke is highly interested in the Maple Leafs, and if he wants to go i say we help him pack...But that article is written for my usual Ducks readers. If you think of something feed me some info, ill do some research and well go from their. Hadn't really thought more about it other than that article.

Liked most of the edits, although I don't know why it is worth your time to change from two spaces after a period to one since both are considered correct. The only thing I changed back was the one word paragraph--raised by two teachers, and I don't care what the style of blogs (and newspaper articles) is, I can't stand it. FIGHT THE POWER!

I'm going to basically commend him for forgetting about Canada. The only reason he ever acknowledges us is if he wants to steal one of our teams. We don't get talked about for expansion, and if we try and get a team, we're shot down by his "board of governors"....I'll send it to you before we post to compare :)

As a Brit my home team is in the Elite League, the top league over here, but I've been an NHL fan since I first saw New Jersey take the Stanley cup at about ten and they've been my adopted team ever since. I'm hopefully moving to Toronto in September and can't wait to watch some live games without having to stay up all night!

As for your comment about what you would like to see, I did write an article that may shed some light on my reasoning ("More Homes Going on Market in San Jose" or something like that) and will be following up with another that may make the picture a littel clearer. Yea, I'm with you on that. I'm still watching (8-2 now) but only because I think I'm enjoying this a little.

I've been trying to blog the game and figure out how it works on b/r, but I'm giving up on that too. There is just too much to write on this! I've called just about everything that has happened this series... I should have gone into journalism or broadcasting and worked NHL games... I just see the game and understand it well.

Glad you liked it haha. You were one of the first two pieces I worked on, so hopefully it worked out. I'm thinking that I'll keep the editors tag, and just work to help out around the NHL Community, and if stuff gets backlogged and you want someone to look at it, drop me a line (pass that around too eh? I'm working to make the NHL Community as accommodating as possible, and I figure that if anyone in the section can come to me with anything—especially editing concerns now—it makes things in the NHL strand a lot easier, as well as frees up some space in other places!). That's not to say I won't periodically roam about however, but I figured this makes things a lot more convenient around here!

Ps. Feel free to edit my work whenever you want. The only "consistent" editor I have, but that's strictly for 'Beyond the Bleachers' stuff, so anything on any piece of mine that you want to tinker with, feel free :)

Hey there. How's it been going?

I am just about to check out the articles you've posted for the playoffs. I was going to do a lot more writing myself, but I've been ill and busy. I don't have to tell you about that! I figure I will recap the Flames/Sharks series later on, and for now will trod along with dribs and drabs. I am looking forward to your newest lineup!

You're probably right about the backlog of playoff coverage--there's been a flood in the last few days. OK, I have a question for you and I want you to remember Mr. Spock's words from the first Star Trek movie, "I have no ego to bruise." I graduated with a minor in Journalism in 1990 and haven't done much writing for news since then, I basically concentrated my efforts in broadcasting. I'm thinking about getting either a part-time writing, editing position or going freelance. In your opinion, do I have what it takes, honestly? Or is this just a pipe-dream I'm thinking about. What do you think. I really don't want to be laughed to scorn by going after this. Let me know and thanks.

Thanks Jen! I have a theory: All of the dead Maple Leafs legends are doing as much as they can to get the Leafs off the schnide (see 2002) but the ghost of Harold Ballard has locked them all up in his bunker because he's not done screwing with the franchise!! (Like all Leafs fans....I am insane).

Thanks for the offer on the research! It sounds like you've got quite the library of info built up there so I'll be sure to keep that in mind :). At least both of your teams are in the playoffs. Who do you cheer for if the Koivu's meet up in the playoffs?

Nah, they just came to me with the offer to write for Beyond the Bleachers, and told me to get some content ready. I remember my mom telling me that emerge story when I was really young, and just kind of revisited Dino because I'd been catching odd snippets of his struggle to reach the Hall of Fame.

It's really frustrating because he was so talented but there were those few events that just mess him up entirely, making him really hard to defend (although he played for the Knights, and I did enjoy what I've seen of him play...). I dunno, it's a touchy subject, so I figured why not take a shot and reopen it?

As far as I'm concerned you can keep the historical aspect of the hockey universe—you're much better at it than me...if the Leafs win the cup anytime soon though, all bets are off as I may go insane and document the years of impotence in some monster of an article. Aside from THAT miracle happening, you have nothing to worry about competition wise :)

I do get back often enough and love to take my son to the Bell Centre to catch the buzz in person. Currently I reside just outside of Leafs Central, which makes me an easy target, except lately....all is quiet on the Leaf front...hmmmm

Hi Jen! I need you help again. I spent all of last night trying to post an article and came up against a wall that wouldn't let me publish. when I finally got it up today I got it on,but with the wrong photo and incomplete title. It should read A Touch of Class: Linden Bows Out, Iginla Finds 50, Flames-Canucks Show Hockey Sportsmanship and for a photo, a picture from last night's game of Linden whispering his sweet nothings to Jarome.

Would it be an imposition to ask you to edit my stuff again, or give it a go? When I try I get sent to the New Article area, sans photo and teaser, and I think I'd set up a second article altogether (if I could get it to work)

Hey there!

I thought I'd do an article on tonight's game, but I don't want to step on your toes as the resident Wild fan. I do have my game notes, so let me know if you had any plans... I'd be glad to share (I don't know how I'd get them to you, but still).

Otherwise, I will be doing a breakdown and look at the first Divisional title for the Wild (and of course what the Flames need to look at). Doug Risebrough (Former Flames player and GM) was talking earlier about the popularity of the team in competition with all the other sports in the US market.

Great game... although I still wish Calgary had a chance at the title, but this is the story-book ending.

Simon still hasn't done anything since joining your adopted crew!

Congratulations on 'Pick of the Day'. A very interesting read. You have a serious skill/passion to be that much of a hockey historian. Quite a talent. You should contact the hockey news and be their 'Column Historian'. Good job, sista!

Great article, didn't need much at all. I doubled checked the numbers and there were discrepancies; I was checking his NHL totals in the record books I have and it seemed you were adding playoffs as well, right? I think there was just a digit or two difference, check it out and let me know what you think.

No need to second guess your work. It's fantastic!

Could you do me a favour in return? I did an article last night and the title is nowhere near what I wanted... it doesn't even make sense right now. It should say "Battle of Alberta Resumes: Edmonton's Playoff Hopes Fizzle with Flames Win". For some reason I cannot edit the title without resubmitting it or something, so if you could give it a try I'd be grateful.

The good thing about Mac n' Cheese is that there are now flavours and new ways to prepare them (like the ready made ones). We have discounts for goalies recognizing that it is not a cheap position. (purchase 2 items and get 10% off - purchase 3 or more items and get 15% off). Knowing the Manager is also a good thing!

Re: Leafs and Sundin. I don't think that they will go after him hard. It all depends on who (Brian Burke?) will be the GM. Sundin will want another one year contract - with a 'no trade clause' I would imagine, yet the Leafs are probably feeling a little burned right now in regards to Sundin's stance at the trade deadline. his position 'snowballed' over to the other Leafs who had no trade clauses. So the Leafs are stinging.

It is too bad, because Sundin - undeservedly - has become the 'poster boy' as to what went wrong with the Leafs (again) this year. Once Ferguson Jr. was fired Sundin became the media 'lightning rod' and as the long standing captain of this dysfunctional team it is too bad that his legacy may well read - 'All-Time Maple Leaf Points Leader', with the word 'BUT' attached with it. Sad really.. you will be able to write that in your NHL History Column in another 20 years...when your son is stopping pucks for the Wild.

Now there is a good article. can you edit it for me? LOL.

My guy's and myself love fitting the little 'keepers' of the world. We just had a little 10 year old goalie from Cleveland come and visit my store yesterday. He needed pads and shoulder pads / chest protector. We relish at the opportunity to fit little guys.

Well, thanks again with the spelling. I'm a bit of a liguist too. As a Canadian whose family is English/Scottish, I have always used Imperial English. It was interesting as a student in Canada to see the amalgamation of three or four different versions of English. Unfortunately (from my point of view) more and more people don't realise that US spelling is different from Brits English. Brought up writing with older style, I have always used "one" (one's favourite team) rather than "you" etc. I actually had a High School teacher, in an academic grade 12 English course, mark "realise" as mis-spelled.

I'll take a look at my titles, but believe it or not one of the most interesting books I have with NHL history is Total NHL, a book that, although briefly, looks at every NHL season from inception to 2003. 20th Century Hockey Chronicle is another that really breaks down all the points and players from each and every season, Cup playoffs, etc. The Legends series. Anything by Peter Gzowski, Brian McFarlane, the guys who were around to relay their own personal old-time experiences.

Minnesota fan, are you? Awesome! It's a great NW race right now and it should be a great first round with a divisional match-up in there somewhere.

I also love your profile picture! I have many books and photos from that era and love the info and characters. Poor Joe Hall! I created the Cleghorn brothers on an Xbox hockey game.

Hi Jennifer, as a big-time Leaf fan (who was only 4 years old when we last won the cup) I would say that an interesting hero from Leaf history is Bill Barilko. He scored the winning goal in the Stanley Cup, I believe in 1956? and that summer he died in a bush plane accident in Northern Ontario. There was a documentary on him a few weeks ago on TV here in Toronto and it was very interesting. The Tragically Hip have a song that references Barilko. I am sure that you the 'Hockey Historian' already know this. Are you a Minnesota girl? I take it from your "Most Memorable Game Attended" that you are! P.S. We almost traded Sundin for Chris Higgins and a 1st, 2nd and 3rd round draft choice! FYI.
