Growing up in Southeast Alaska I had no "local" team, though people were constantly shoving the Seattle teams down my throat. When I saw Bo Jackson play I became an instant Raiders fan.
I was also a fan at the time of Run TMC (Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond, and Chris Mullin for those not familiar with the late 80s/early 90s Warriors), with Tim Hardaway being my favorite basketball player.
I had an aunt who lived in the Bay Area and she took me to a few A's games, but I didn't care much for Jose Canseco. I was a White Sox fan.
My dad raised me to be a Michigan Wolverines fan, as well as a fan of all the Detroit teams who to this day represent my second favorite team in every sport.
Over the course of the 90s several things happened. 1) The Warriors drafted(sort of) my favorite college basketball player, Chris Webber, from Michigan. 2) the Raiders moved back to Oakland. 3) The Raiders signed my favorite college football player, Tyrone Wheatley, from Michigan.
I was becoming more and more entrenched in Oakland sports teams and then, in the summer of 2001, I was clicking through channels on the TV and saw Jose Canseco wearing a White Sox uniform. I was crushed, but I took it as a sign and jumped on the A's bandwagon and have been a fan of all teams Oakland ever since.
That's my story. Go Raiders.
