  1. Hey Curtis,

Well, I do want Calgary to win the series vs. the Sharks, and I was ecstatic after the Game Three miracle (the 3-0 deficit/Cujo game), and was already mocking my other friends midway through Game Four because the Flames were up.

I want the Flames to get past San Jose because I always wanted a Calgary-Boston final (which never happened). Though, the Flames are like the most star-crossed team in the west, all those OT elimination games that I always point out (1990, 1991, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2006 - all eliminated in first round in OT in final games)... part of me is thinking that they're just cursed or something ever since that Joel Otto goal in 1989 - hope that I am wrong about this year (I predicted the Sharks to win in Game Seven).

Again, that prediction was made with my head - Calgary just can't seem to win "the big one". Those years they lost in 1990, 91, 94, 95 were unbelievable. But once again this year, I want the Flames to win in my heart. If I am wrong about that "prediction", I would be happy cuz that means Calgary won. Looking at Linden in Vancouver makes me upset about Nieuwendyk. Instead of re-signing the way Linden did in the mid-90s, Nieuwendyk held out and pretty much forced the trade to Dallas (though I guess they got Iginla out of it). They had such a great team with Nieuwendyk, Fluery, MacInnis, et al, but never put it together and were always looked upon as second-class to the Oilers. Naturally I liked them because of their underdog status then.

I was talking to M. MacDonald Hall (Calgary fan on here) and yeah, it'd be nice to see Calgary in the Finals. They were screwed in 2004 in Game Six.

I am disappointed Ottawa collapsed the way they did... it would have been nice to see them go further. As for the NJ Devils, I am extremely happy they're down 3-1 now. They're the team that ruined hockey with that boring style.. good for them!

I think Montreal will make it to the Finals, but I will admit watching the Boston-Montreal series makes me want to see the Bruins pull an upset. But the Habs are too good. Too bad.

Of course, there's another reason I want to see Calgary win... the Thornton factor. I will admit I am one of those people who say that Thornton is a choker. He did nothing for the Bruins (along with Byron "I-want-more-money" Dafoe) come playoff time.

  2. Some writers on here have advised me not to bother responding to the "anonymous" posters before; I guess I have to learn to do that.

I was mainly responding to the "anon" Canucks fan posters who said Toronto's Cups don't count because those were won in the "Original Six" era, etc.

    :-(

From now, I strive to write about positive things for the Red Sox and Bruins - a la the article I wrote about the Bruins' loss in Game Four.

I sincerely apologize, Curtis, that my article rubbed you the wrong way. :-(

  3. I hear the commentators on Team 1040 mocking the other Canadian clubs. :-(

I retract that statement about "Vancourites were celebrating" - I was out of line with that stereotypical comment.

I also promised on Bleacher Report that I will NOT attack the Canadiens even though I don't like them, because the 2007-08 Habs are a good team.

From what I understood, according to CTV Channel 9 on Monday, the reaction on Team 1040 was that it was 50-50 in terms of people arguing whether or not they agreed with the firing.

On Tuesday, CTV Channel 9 did an unofficial poll and over 65% were in favour of the firing...

  4. Wait, they're wearing white, so it must be at home...

  5. I like your profile picture. Is that Game 7 at MSG in '94? And is that Kirk McLean with Linden? What a heart-breaker.

  6. Well Curtis, thanks for your note.

You are right; Vancouver must go 4-0-0 to help its own cause and hope for help elsewhere (ie. Detroit, St. Louis, Chicago).

Hmm... good question. Alright, I will bite. Yes, I do live in Vancouver... not sure if you guessed that based on the fact that I write too much about the Canucks.

I've always rooted for underdogs... so in the home city, the home team doesn't really qualify as such. (When I lived in Fort McMurray--small town near Edmonton, I was anti-Oilers.) Although, I will admit, I actually "wanted" Vancouver to win at least a couple times, if I remember correctly.

In 1996, they were a "feel-good" story (with Gino Odjick scoring twice in the playoffs - both game-winners?) and I hated Patrick Roy, so I wanted Vancouver to upset Colorado - which they ALMOST did.

In 2001, there was the "feel-good" story with Bob Essensa, and again I wanted them to beat Colorado in the playoffs, but "Backup Bob" only started twice and lost the low-scoring games, I believe.... while Cloutier got more more offensive help in Game One but blew it.

Other than that, I wanted them to miss the playoffs in 1991 - but damn, they beat the underdog Jets late in the regular season to clinch a spot. AND the fact that BACK THEN, there were no doubleheaders on CBC; just one playoff game in the west, cuz of the late games. So, living in BC meant I missed out on the EPIC Calgary-Edmonton series, and since Vancouver managed to survive SIX games vs. the Kings, I couldn't watch the Flames-Oilers until Game Seven.

1992 & 1993 - Jets played Vancouver in the playoffs, and Winnipeg was a huge underdog, so I wanted the Jets to win. (See a pattern now?)

1994 - liked Calgary to beat Vancouver, and liked Dallas (because of Andy Moog) to beat Vancouver

But like I said, I didn't root against them in 1996 or 2001... but both times they lost out.

And generally speaking, since I am surrounded by Vancouver fans, I talk to a lot of them, and I see they are just so biased and overly optimistic. When they signed Messier, I openly hoped for disaster but everyone laughed.

Well, but sports is unpredictable/unscripted, so it makes it that much more intriguing.

Am I negative? perhaps. After all, when I give out true/false tests, I often make "False" appear more times than not. Am I disagreeable? Hmm. Not really. Depends on the topic. On the topic of the Canucks, I just happen to go the other way.

    Cheers.

    KP

  7. Well, Curtis, not sure if you still visit this site... but I have listened to your advice and have toned it way down since your comments...

The last four games of the season though, will be interesting, not to mention nail-biting...

We'll have to see what happens.

  8. Hey Curtis,
Thanks for reading my article, and for the comments. It's always nice to see new hockey fans! Welcome!

  9. I root for underdogs, sir, and I bash whichever team(s) I see fit. As sports fans, we all are passionate about one thing or another. Admittedly I got carried away with the Vancouver stuff, but if you've actually checked out my other stuff, I not only trash the Canucks but other teams as well. It is in our nature to be critics, so to speak, and take shots at teams/athletes/cities when they fail--ie. Chicago and Miami, as I had previously done.

On the other hand, when someone deserves credit--ie. the Coyotes for their impressive run--yes, I will talk about it, just as I did the Washington Capitals, New York Giants, and others.

Yes, like any sports fan, I love to talk and write about sports. Just because I may be "wrong", at the end of the day, it's all for fun and it's good to rub it into each other's faces when their teams lose.

    Regardless, thanks for the post.

    Have a pleasant day. :)
    KP Wee

  10. Yes, it is a great little town...but it's changing rather rapidly right now. I'm not sure how long I'll be able to afford it.

  11. Hi Curtis. I really enjoyed reading your article. I'm looking forward to more.
