As far as Washington goes, they have the best chance of moving up into the elite class of Pittsburgh, Detroit, and Anaheim, but the second round showed that they have serious defensive problems which they must correct. They were up two games to none on Pittsburgh and failed to put them away. They also had trouble defeating the New York Rangers. Their most serious problem is in goal. Jose Theodore showed he could not do the job and the young Russian goalie showed promise but may not be the answer. The top three teams have none of these problems and Pittsburgh will be tougher to beat now that they have won the Cup for the first time. Until these problems are resolved, Washington looks like the best of the second tier teams, but no more than that.
