About

My name is Jim Vollmer. I am a Business student at the University of Detroit Mercy, and I am working towards an MBA as well as minor degrees in English, Philosophy, and Sports Management. But more importantly, for the purpose of this bio, I am an avid sports fan. In 1997, the Detroit Red Wings won their first Stanley Cup in 55 years and the first championship for Detroit in my lifetime. This victory, and more distinctly the crystal clear memories of my Grandpa and Dad's joy and celebration, launched me into the world of sports fandom.

As I have grown older I have developed a love for most all North American sports, but my heart still lies with Hockey and Combat sports--Boxing and MMA. I have played and practiced both of these two competitions. I have also become fascinated with the business side of sports. From CBA negotiations, to the importance and power of agents, the drama behind the business world of sports can sound like an episode of Mad Men.

Anyways, eventually I hope to be an active writer for the Bleacher report so that I can share my thoughts and opinions with the rest of the fans around the world.

Short List

  • Favorite Athletes

Pavel Datsyuk, Nick Lidstrom, Mayhem Miller, GSP, Matt Stafford, Calvin Johnson, Alex Ovechkin, Brandon Knight,

  • Favorite Sports Teams

Detroit Red Wings, Lions, Pistons, and Tigers. All my college devotion goes to my University of Detroit Titans.

  • Favorite Coaches

Mike Babcock and Scotty Bowman are two of the best coaches ever, regardless of sports. I am lucky enough to have had both of them coach my team.

  • All-Time Sports Moment

The March 26th, 1997 brawl between the Red Wings and Avalance was like my sports baptism.

  • Unitas or Montana?

    Joe Montana, no question.

  • Jordan or Russell?

Michael Jordan. He's the best basketball player ever. There are some athletes who exude a sort of prowess over their sport that is unmistakable. Gretzky, Yzerman, and Mario had it in hockey. Tom Brady, Reggie White, and Barry Sanders had it in football. Mariano Rivera has it in baseball. Jordan had that in spades.

  • Gretzky or Orr?

Bobby Orr changed hockey. Gretzky, in my opinion, was not as complete a player as Bobby Orr. He was absolutely untouchable when it comes to talking about hockey sense and passing ability, but the reality is hockey is a collision sport. In my opinion, to be called the best player ever you have to dominate every aspect of the game. So for a non-physical player to be called the best hockey player ever is, in my opinion, pretty silly. Now to be fair I never watched either play live. But I have watched both play on film, and to me it seemed like Gretzky was not only the less complete player but he had an overwhelming amount of support that Orr did not.

  • Tiger or Nicklaus?

Jack is the epitome of class. Tiger, in my opinion, looks like a bully that got stood up to right now. This question'll be answered once and for all in a few years though.
