Short List

  • Favorite Athletes

Hakeem Olajuwon, Craig Biggio, Andre Johnson, Kevin Durant, Vince Young and Brian McBride.

  • Favorite Sports Teams

Rockets, Astros, Texans, Longhorns and Padres.

  • Favorite Coaches

Augie Garrido, Mike Krzyzewski, Tom Izzo, Rudy Tomjanovich and Phil Jackson.

  • All-Time Sports Moment

Vince Young scrambling for the game-winning score against USC in the 2006 Rose Bowl, a.k.a. the greatest college football game of all time.

  • Most Memorable Game Attended

Barry Bonds' 70th home run at Enron Field (now Minute Maid Park) in Houston. Didn't know about steroids at the time, but it was my birthday and the ball went straight over my head so it was by far my most memorable experience at the ballpark.

  • Most Unbreakable Sports Record

Joe DiMaggio's hitting streak, Ricky Henderson's career steals record and Antonio Cromartie's longest kick return record of 109 yards. They'd have to lengthen the field for that to be broken.

  • Ruth or Mays?

Mays. Only argument for Ruth being better would be because he pitched too. Otherwise, the Say Hey Kid was the better all-around player.

  • Unitas or Montana?

Montana. Stats are similar so I go with rings. Plus, he took the Chiefs to an AFC Championship game. That has to count for something.

  • Jordan or Russell?

Jordan. Even if Jordan wouldn't have retired so many times he still wouldn't come close to having as many rings as Russell. But Jordan WAS my childhood and he is arguably the GOAT.

  • Gretzky or Orr?

Gretzky. Same argument as Jordan in my books. Greatest scorer of all time and won championships while I was in grade school. Only hockey I watch is old Gretzky highlights and reruns of the Miracle on Ice.

  • Pele or Maradona?

Pele. Main reason is because Maradona is best known for a play in which he used his hand to score a goal. And remember, this is futbol. Hand of god has nothing on Pele.

  • Federer or Sampras?

Sampras. I would normally lean toward Federer since he has the most grand slams, but I've watched him get schooled by Nadal and Djokovic enough in the last couple of years that I now lean Sampras.

  • Tiger or Nicklaus?

Nicklaus. Until Tiger breaks his record, it's still the Golden Bear's title to lose. Unlike most of these discussions though, Tiger is still playing. So this could change.

  • Petty or Earnhardt?

Earnhardt. Petty is a racing institution, but I can't vote against a guy nicknamed the Intimidator and who died on the race track.

  • Schumacher or Senna?

Schumacher. I don't know enough about IndyCar to give a real good reason why I'd go Schumacher over Senna other than the records. Senna, like Earnhardt, died on the track so I'm tempted to lean toward what could have been, but I'm going with Schumacher.

  • ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12 or SEC?

Big 12. SEC owns football and ACC owns basketball but the Big 12 is the most balanced of any of the conferences. The Big Ten is so old fashioned that even with 11, and now 12, teams they still won't budge on the name. The Pac-12 get kudos for evolving, but may not even get two teams in March Madness this year. And the Big East can't stop hemorrhaging teams and fixing them with SMU, UCF and San Diego State Band-Aids.
