Rael's Bio

I am a born and raised San Franciscan and a lifelong Giants fan. I also root for the Niners and Warriors but I bleed orange and black. I was at two of the three World Series games at Pac Bell in 2002 (for free thanks to a friend who worked the turnstiles) and have seen many of Barry Bonds' home runs sail into McCovey Cove.

My Italian family came from North Beach, thus my real name Glenn Franco. Have a stepdad, so added Simmons, due to my father's death at a young age.

  3. SF AP does sports. I knows the guy in charge of AP Calif., Hawaii, Nev. If you want, I can put in a word for you. You have my e-mail.

If you apply for any job, make sure your clips are error-free. Although I don't edit my notes and responses, I edit all my columns and try to eliminate errors, although BR has some style differences than I'm used to.

Also, do you know AP Style? If not, get an AP Style book and start going through it.

  6. I'll check him out.

My writing is probably out of date for satire anyway. Few 'Niner fans remember Randy Cross or his wine-sipping comment. Even with wine glasses, I guess the satire fell flat. Oh, well. I tried. I bet Randy Cross would get it and I bet he would agree that the Bay Area should have dealt the 'Niners a stadium years ago.

And if you knew me, you'd know that I would never want my beloved 'Niners in LA LA Land. My LA friends whom I've debated for years kno that. I was happy when we ran the Lambs' butts out of Anaheim. I'm as rabid and L.A. "hater" as you'll find, particularly since my brother was an L.A. fan. So it's personal.

Do you realize why the Rams left L.A.? Attendance tanked; support tanked. It happened because we had a run on the Rams that just killed their attendance and our Super Bowls deflated the Rams' fan base. In fact, at some games, 'Niner fans were more plentiful than Rams' fans. We killed that L.A. franchise because of the DeBartolo-era run with Walsh, Montana, Lott and many more.

  7. Rael,

I just checked. My label on Bonds was "editorial," not satire. Nor have I claimed it as satire. Your analysis that Bonds was very popular with Giants' fans is true; however, I know a lot of Giants' fans who disliked Bonds as much or more than me and who stopped going to SF games as a result. So it's impossible to know if there could have been more popular players. But, your analysis is sound; I just don't agree.

  8. I meant to saythat Nancy Gay at the Chron is better than Jenkins and there are plenty of other columnists, as well.

  9. Oh, one other thing. Being offensive is part of being a columnist, in my opinion. I'm not politically correct as you will noticewhen I ripped Favre, perhaps too hard. But, once you put it out there, it's out there.

I also don't care for Jenkins' writing over the years. Nancy Gay Simmons I don't know.

  10. Rael, thanks for the comments. I think the satire of wine glasses, Randy Cross' statement that I changed from wine-sipping to wine-gulping comes across to 'Niner fans who were alive to remember the controversy when he said it. Nothing could be more silly than saying the 'Niners should move to L.A. I'll try to improve my satire, however. I think it's more a generational thing, but you could be correct.

Bonds was not satire at all. I don't recall saying it was. I am serious about what I wrote about Bonds, although I believe he's being persecuted for steroids. I dont think I ttiled that oen satire nor do I recall defending it as satire.

Mike is a classless idiot who is too young to remember Cross' wine-sipping comment.

There are jobs in journalism. Go to journalism.com, I think that's what it is, and CNPA's job bulletin. I know there are some sports reporting jobs out there because I've seen them come through my e-mail. Although I'm not really looking into getting back into newspapers, I'm on some J-job lists.

I don't see a future in print as much as there was a past, at least for dailies, because most dailies are distributed by folks using cars and gas and cars are getting mor expensive. It's an archaic way to deliver the news and extraordinarily expensive.

Additionally, the Web is taking ad dollars away from most newspapers and many are bleeding red ink and are laying off as a result. Newspapers still have not been able to be able to transfer ads in the dollars they need to the Net in order to keep full staffs, so they limp along on shrinking revenues or some are subsidized by parent corporations.

I started out in sports in high school as well as editorial writing. Send me an e-mail at glennfrancosimmons@yahoo.com and I'll give you the contact info for the sports editor I hired at the daily.

Don't give up. There are jobs.

  11. Thanks for the support on the prospect article. Totally agree with everything you are saying.

And don't even listen to that Ray guy talking about trading Cain. He has commented on each Giants article I have written saying that Cain and Schierholtz are crap. He is an idiot. He keeps saying that the kids need a chance but then he slams Schierholtz.

    viva gigantes

  12. My wife has never been to SF. Do you know of a seafood rest. that you would recommend near the warf?

  13. Fresno might still be a little tough for Zito. Might want to try Single A San Jose.

  14. Yup, it's good to see the Merk finally contribute at the big league level after all those years of promise. The Russ Ortiz trade finally pays off!

  15. Funky win last night, but hey we'll take it!
