Hmm. There may be some schools or coaches that do that, but I really doubt that kind of stuff goes on at Alabama. If a recruit wants to commit then Saban will make sure they announce it. Helps draw in even bigger names. If the recruit really wanted to keep it a secret I'd assume he would have a good reason, such as not wanting to catch hell from the locals, friends and family, etc., for his decision.
Interesting thoughts though, I hadn't considered it before.

Monty, believe it or not. NMSU Aggies finished undefeated in 1960 and won a bowl game. That is their last bowl appearance. El Lobo of UNM also had an undefeated season, I believe in 1982! Problem with the NM schools is that they cannot sustain this sucess in following seasons. Too bad. They apparently cannot keep the winning coaches on board.

Hey Jimmy, I really enjoy your articles and insight, and I wanted to pick your brain on something.
Do recruits and coaches ever reach secret agreements re a verbal commitment?
I can appreciate recruits that want to carefully weigh their options and make the right choice. However, I'm sure most of them know what they want to do well in advance of signing day. While I can understand a young guy loving the attention and the opportunity to take a lot of school visits, it seems like a nightmare for a coach to be trying to fill his 25 slots and yet keep a place open for some of the big hitters that love to wait till the last minute to make their choice known.
So I was wondering if coaches sometimes push guys for a commit but promise to keep it under wraps so the guy can still enjoy all the courting and attention.

The anti-hunting sentiment is not the problem, it is merely a symptom. The problem is a skewed value system that fails to understand what really matters in life.
People that are overly sentimental and idealistic can come across as nice and caring but in truth their skewed values can make them dangerous people. As proof, several of the people on this board expressed they would rather that a man was killed by a bear than that a bear was killed by a man. That's sick, totally messed up values. That is truly disturbing.

Most hunters love the outdoors and have a respect and appreciation for the animals they hunt. Most kills are instantaneous and the animal never even knows what happened.
Contrast this with what happens to a cow going through a slaughter house and you tell me which is more humane.
You people crying and moaning over people hunting are either totally ignorant or in denial about what goes on in the real world to keep you eating meat and wearing leather.
Instead of posting your silly sentiment you should get all your tree hugging friends together and have a good cry while you watch Bambi. Or better yet, come out to Montana and we'll let you pet some of our grizzlies. They would really like that.
