Pete Alfano has been covering sports for more than 40 years. He worked in New York for Newsday, the New York Times and National Sports Daily. His first assignment as a 23-year-old out of college in 1969 was a Mets game against the Pirates at Shea Stadium for United Press International in the magical summer of 1969. On that eventful Saturday Bob Moose pitched a no-hitter against the Mets. What a way to break in.
Pete moved on to Newsday and covered the New York Knicks during those glory days in the early 1970s when they won their only two championships. He was the Jets beat writer in the tumultuous year of 1976 when Lou Holtz was coaching the team and the inconic Joe Namath was in his last season as Jets quarterback. Pete has covered major events in every major sport and also written and reported on boxing, tennis, horse racing, soccer and the Olympics. He helped cover the 1986 World Series and was in the press box when Bill Buckner let that ground ball go through his legs. His last Olympics was in Sydney in 2000 when he worked for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. His final assignment for the Star-Telegram was covering the year-long buildup to Super Bowl XLV in North Texas, the one marred by ice, snow, frigid temperatures and unsafe temporary seats.
