Ben's Bio

Born and raised in the metro Atlanta area, Ben Gunby is definitely the epitome of a hometown fan. His favorite NASCAR driver was Bill Elliott, and his favorite sports teams consist of the four professional franchises in Atlanta, Georgia Tech, Georgia, and Georgia State, as well as the Calgary Flames because they used to play in Atlanta. He's a fan of David Ragan and Reed Sorreson, as well as Davis Love III, David Duval and Stewart Cink. He's also an ardent supporter of his former high school, the Social Circle Redskins. Other teams of interest are usually teams with players who played high school and/or college football in the state of Georgia.

However, he does not limit his sports watching to just the local teams. He's as versed on teams from around the nation as he is with those in his own backyard. He closely follows the NFL, Major League Baseball, NASCAR, College Football and College Basketball. He is also a more than avid fan of golf, and has more than just a passing interest in tennis and the NHL, as well as college baseball. Basically, if it's a sport, he follows it, and follows it on a national scale. As a fan he's been fortunate to witness some pretty big moments in sports, and attend big time sporting events. He's been to the Brickyard 400 and Daytona 500, he's been to NFL and MLB playoff games. He's seen a perfect game thrown and been to the men's SEC tournament, as well as been to the PGA Championship.

Outside of his passion for following sports he (untill health issues have put that on hold for a while) also enjoys playing them. He can be found shooting pool, or playing golf, as well as enjoying pickup basketball games or playing for a local recreational softball team. Outside of the realm of sports he enjoys movies and music of all kinds, as his tastes are definitely rather eclectic. He enjoys cooking as well, as next to the sports networks, Food Network probably ranks as his favorite channel. He loves to experiment in the kitchen.

Favorite Sports Teams

Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta Braves, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Atlanta Hawks, Atlanta Thrashers and my Social Circle Redskins

All Time Sports Moment

Game Six of the 1995 World Series

Most Memorable Game Attended

Either the 1992 Pepsi 400 where Richard Petty led the first five laps in his final race at Daytona, or the 1992 Hooters 500 at Atlanta, a race all NASCAR fans know the significance of.

Most Unbreakable Sports Record

Richard Petty's 200 wins.

Ruth or Mays?

Mays. To me, was a better overall athlete, and Ruth of course played in a league where he only competed against white athletes. Mayes overall game impresses me more.

Unitas or Montana?

Give me Montana. His ability to do just what his team needed at all times was uncanny. That and I know more about Montana.

Pele or Maradona?

Pele. His impact went beyond the playing field and he had an impact on his sport like few people have ever had, in any sport.

Jordan or Gretzky?

Michael Jordan, though not by much. Both dominated their sport in their prime, though Jordan it seemed was just a little more capable of doing it on his own. You can't go wrong with either, but I'll take MJ. Maybe it's his classic Gatorade and McDonald's commercials that push him past "The Great One".

Pac 10, Big 12, Big 10, SEC, ACC, or Big East?

It depends on the sport. Football? Is there any question? It's the SEC. Basketball? Traditionaly it's the ACC, but things are weird this season. I'm going to go with the Big 12.

  1. exactly you stuck your damn nose in and started your crap with me because you disagree with my view on the almighty Favre. Too bad I write what I want when I have a chance someone has to give a voice to another view than just puckering up to Brett Favre and whoever else the media tells us to.
In all seriousness I do hope your health problems get better and you get back to doing the things you enjoy I know how much that can suck.

  2. Sorry man, I didn't mean that to sound hostile though, and if that's the vibe I gave off then I'm sorry about that. I have a bad habbit of scrolling to the bottom of the comments section when I see that there's a new one, so I didn't check the other comments I posted. All that (the earlier post) was about was just me trying to seek clarifictation, because I couldn't figure out where the word "guaranteed" came in, and just wanted to see where I missed it because it is just a preview, and you're right—nothing is guaranteed until November when the season is over and it's written in the history books. Sorry for sounding hostile though, and again...thanks for reading haha.

  3. Guaranteed? I can't seem to find where I said that in my article, so I'd appreciate it if you enlightened me. The best I can find is when I talk about Johan's contributions to the Mets "ensuring they can stay competitive for the entire season". And I never said they'd be unchallenege...I even said that Johan would have trouble with the high-powered Philly and Atlanta offenses, and I separated the Phils by three wins just from the Mets. Just because I think the Phils will win the Wild Card doesn't mean I don't think they'll challenge for the division—on the contrary I think they'll challenege, but if Johan stays healthy and consistent then there's no way I can see them replicating last year's collapse.

    Thanks for reading.

  4. Ben,

Like I said, I'm not (and can't be) responsible for the work of new User-Editors. If you want, I can ensure that NO ONE edits your articles...but of course then they wouldn't be fully integrated into the network. Unfortunately, it isn't possible to limit your articles to particular editors.

Personally, I'd recommend that you continue to leave notes and role with the punches--and continue to nullify any revisions that don't sit well. Let me know how you want to go forward when you get a chance.

  5. hey man, i was just tryin to help u out. I didn't mean any harm by trying to edit your article. sorry bout that.

  6. Haha, no worries. I'll do all 30 teams. My point isn't to go so incredibly in-depth with the previews, but just to take a quick look at each team. If you end up doing some previews, I'd be happy to post the links to them in my articles.

  7. Hey Ben,

I just wanted to let you know that Bleacher Report has launched out of beta with an updated look and feel and some great new features. Check out the "Game On" link in the header to find out more.

Next week we'll be launching the site to the world with some public announcements—and it'd be great to get a contribution from you between now and Tuesday to make Bleacher Report's launch a success.

Let me know if you need any help with ideas or have questions. Have a great weekend Ben!

  8. Ben,

    A note on revisions...

Please understand that as the site gets bigger, it will impossible for me to centrally notify all new editors that you don't like short paragraphs. I'd suggest you leave a note to that effect in the Editor Feedback section of all articles immediately after you write them...which will hopefully remedy the problem. If you don't want your articles edited at all, you can also indicate that.

    Best,

    Ryan

  9. thanks for posting on my teams to not win a super bowl. Check out part two

  10. Oh, no...I understood that it wasn't directed towards me. I just didnt want to mess with someone's article and not explain why there weren't any changes. Yours was on the top of the list, so naturally, I clicked it first. I don't want to stick my nose where it doesn't belong, but I have noticed that internet readers have short attention spans, so that's probably why your articles get edited that way. At the same time, I understand where you are coming from too. It might help if leave a kind note to any future editor mentioning that you would prefer this/that not to be changed. That might help any future editors know why you wrote it like that. Just thought that could help. Let me know what you think. Thanks again for understanding my two "edits" to your article.
